Indy maxx block problems, cam bearings spun.... - 07/29/09 04:32 PM

well now i have another issue. Got about 35 passes on this engine. It lost 4 mph but i didn't think anything about it since i was changing the combo anyway. So i just took it apart and was looking for a way to help return the top end oil quicker and i see the front 3 cam bearings have all turned. The block came from indy with the bearings installed. I didn't measure it yet so i don't know if the registers are the correct size or not so don't know what my fix is going to be. i guess some green loctite and drill some holes for pins.

Another thing i see is the sleeves are now down lower than the deck by a few thousands.

So my question is...is anybody else having these same issues and what have you done to fix them.

thanks, bob

well it seems all the indy stories are true. The front cam bearing bore is .006 over spec and indy green loctited the front bearing in. 2+3 are "only" .003 over. Screwed up part is durabond makes a oversized bearing they could have put in but now i have to bore the cam tunnel and fix it myself.

Just sucks to hear stories like this I've yet to run mine. I asked both Indy and the guy who sold me the block whether I needed to open up the valley oil passages and pin the cam bearings. The look I got from the Indy guys at the Mopars at the Strip event was like "you stupid fu** how dare you question our engineering. That was basically the answer I got from them too. "Don't touch the galley holes, and the cam bearings are fine as is and won't spin". It sure as hell would have been a lot easier to deal with while my engine was still at the machine shop and not all buttoned up.

A guy shouldn't have to worry about this kind of thing after spending the big bucks on "high end" American made parts.

I agree with you but as long as i have reading these threads, i have learned to buy Indy stuff through someone you trust and have them check it out before using it.Then if its wrong you can take it out on them.

I don't think it would have made a difference. In my case the Indy dealer I bought it from told me I could just run it as is. That is as is regarding the problems mentioned here... Not as is without checking clearances etc...

Too bad you got scammed by them..Its not that hard to hit those tolerances-really. They must use fractions like carpenters

Or "I bored that front cam bearing area 3 times and it's still too big."

At this point i will say yes. My problem was i was hell bent to build a short deck engine so indy was the choice. in hind site i should have just built a iron block rb height.

A friend of mine bought a new aluminum shortblock from Indy last year and ran it with no problems. Over the winter when he had it taken apart, the shop found 3 or 4 of the cam bearings loose and had to have the block cam bearing tunnel cut for the 429/460 Ford size cam bearings. Comp makes a cam for Mopars that fit that size cam bearing. Good luck. Dyno

Just so you guys don't think Indy saves all of their magic for Mopar guys, they have spread it to us AMC guys as well. The Indy AMC blocks both my friend and I bought have had a LOT of issues and they aren't even in the cars yet. Cam bearings, what a mess. The only bore that was the right size was the rear #5. The rest were smaller by up to .006". Indy pressed them in and then honed them a LOT. I re-honed the bores and pinned the bearings, not taking their word on anything.

Then there is the crank main bores. They decided to make them BB Mopar size. That's close, only .002" too big. Is that a problem?? LOL Their solution was to have it sent back to them so they could line bore it. After seeing what they did to the first one, no way on the second one. I'll be using .001" stainless shim stock under the bearings. Yep, that's why you buy a new block.

How about all the pipe plug holes that are only tapped a few threads? Bell housing bolt holes that go into the water jacket? And the list goes on.

OK, sorry, rant over.

Bob,

From the picture it really doenst look that bad. If the bore measured +0.006, are you sure you can't get a set of oversized bearings to work?

Regards,

Mike

The durabonds are +.010 OD so i have to bore the tunnel to the correct size.

Re: Indy maxx block problems, cam bearings spun.... - 07/30/09 05:30 PM

something doesn't sound quite right. if the bore is .006" oversize, the bearing would FALL out of it. there would be no press fit at all.

I figured he meant .0006 oversize. But even then loctite wouldnt hold it in...
