How to possitively ID a Dana 60 over a 61? - 04/17/06 11:21 PM

Hi Guys.
The one thing I am not, and that is an expert on IDing of rearends. There seems to be so many versions of the Dana 60 over the 61. Can anyone help me possitively id this housing before I go further with this build. I will attach several pics. I know this is a general question but it will be a race rearend---thanks---Greg

I liked this housing as it seems to be the beefiest housing I have seen as far as strutting etc.

I have the same one and IIRC the 60HD stamp is your answer. I believe the 61's were stamped 61 and the offset of the pinion centerline is different than a 60 as well. Way thick axle tubes aren't they?

What the heck did they put a 61 in??? I've never even heard of a Dana 61 ???

As for that 60 HD, man does that look bulletproof!!! Any idea on how much heavier it is compared to run-of-the-mill 60?

61's were used in many Ford truck and (I think) Dodge van applications. I believe they were all full-floaters and used in 3/4 ton and larger vehicles thru the mid to late 1970's. The design of the housing permitted taller axle ratios.

That is a Dana 60 HD. We just built one for my dads challenger using that housing.

Here is a pretty complete list of Dana BOM numbers from `79-99 if yours is still there (right axle tube) there is a link to Dana`s site that will search a BOM number or part number if yours isn`t shown.

A list of some Mopar specific BOM`s

The Dana 60 HD was used mostly in heavy vehicle like mini motor homes and the 3/4 ton vans that didn't have the Dana 70 in them. It is a lot heavier than the regular Dana 60s.

I think the 61 was also used in some C-bodies.

Dr. Diff would be the one to ask.

Dana 53 rearends were sometimes (rarely) used in C-bodies.

Dana 61 rearends were found in some Ford 3/4 ton pickups and vans in the late '70s/early '80s.

Dana 61 front-ends were used in late '80s/early '90s Dodge diesel/automatic 4x4 pickups.

When I was looking for a Dana 60 housing in a local bone yard, a few years ago. I saw one of that style housing under a late 70's Dodge "Snow Commander", 4 x 4 pickup. I had never seen one gusseted like that either.
