foam for lift -off fiberglass hood... - 06/28/09 06:57 PM

where do you find the foam cubes that i see racers putting on their lift-off hoods to protect the top of the car while the hood sits on it?...i've tried foam from a regular seat cushion but it's not dense (stiff) enough..the weight of the hood immediately smashes it almost flat...the cubes i've seen being used appear to be very stiff and hardly give at all once the hood is set on the top of the car..where do you find this foam??

I would say any GOOD upholstery shop should have some good DENSE foam ....

When I did my shipping of parts ... I used the most dense foam I could find to put on the bottom of the box to protect the part.

I used a couple of pieces of those foam pool snakes,
same thing I used for the cables on the trailer tail
gate... just used silicone to glue them on the hood

Rollbar padding from Jegs, cut to length and angle you need. Stuck on with 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Has worked for me for 10yrs plus still on firmly.

Same as Bondo Bob, spunges . to get four inches you'll need to stack two together .

Thats where I got mine.

I used medium density foam and 3M spray adhesive to glue it on.

I used 4 extra long bolts at the corners of my hood scoop. Then welded a big (2" or so) fender washer to a nut and put a 1/4" thick rubber chair foot on the washer. Works perfect to set on my roof.

My only problem with the foam blocks is...are they fireproof? Some are some are not. That's why I made mine like I did.
