Whats a good oil pump for 600 H.p. - 02/04/06 02:49 PM

What is the best punp for a 600 hp street strip 446 ? is anyone running a milodon adjustable?

I'm running a stock-type hi-capacity. No problems with it. Guessing the hemi makes about 675hp.

Don't know what the "best" pump is, but the melling hv pumps seem to work well. We've made well over 600 with them.

Using a speed pro high volume and matched the pump opening to the block passage. My biggest problem is lowering the pressure as I have too much.

What viscosity oil are you running?
I had the same problem with my Demon's 440 and ended up taking out the 20/50 and throwing 10/30 in it, it would then idle at 45 psi.

Melling HV, and If you have room, add a milodon single line

does too much pressure use any extra horsepower? I have about 90 psi at a hot idle.
why not have high pressure with hi volume?

i run a Milodon pump on mine w/ a single ext. static p/u.

for reducing pressure on the Melling HV pump, i add an extra washer behind the plug the holds the spring in. that'll drop it down some. CHIP

You don't need anything fancy for that if you keep the rpm below 7000. Both Melling and SpeedPro pumps are just fine. I ran my race car last year with a standard volume Melling pump, with a little port work. I shift at 6900 and cross the the finish line at 7000. 1/2" internal pickup, deep sump oil pan, Milodon windage tray. I adjust my spring for 75 psi going down the track (3000+ rpm).

Is the 1/2 pickup realy that important? Since the passages inside the block after it threads in are not drilled that big the rest of the way to the pump does it make much diff.? thanks

what do you all consider good pressure or too little pressure? I have an iron headed 440 that idles at about 25 psi when hot but jumps to 65 after almost any throttle.

thats pretty good,if your rpm are 6500 or less

the guy that said he had 90psi at hot idle has somthing not rite

In my opinion, no. Also, I've been using stock (not high volume) pumps for years with all of my engines. Engine are 850+ HP B-1's running at 7600+ rpm.

I'm running a stock type high volume pump on my 528 Hemi. No problems here.

I'm running SAE30, and using the Milodon adjustable bypass. I have the thing turned our pretty far and I still have 85psi at 6000rpm and 30 at idle hot. I also have full groove bearings and no restrictors.

Ken, would you mind giving us your oiling system setup sometime? I think I recall that you're running the stock pump with 3/8 pickup but have full grooved mains and a high pressure spring? Unbushed lifters if I recall but blocked off left gallery? 30 weight? I'm still trying to figure out why I spun the rod bearing in my 383 stroker.

Part of doing the 1/2 NPT pickup mod is to drill that passage to 5/8", which is the ID of 1/2 pipe. How important is it? Well, that depends if you need it or not! Nothing is cut and dry.

Andy- I run a full length dragster pan in the T-Bird because of low ground clearance with a single line swinging pick-up. In the Barracuda, where I have more room, I have used a Moroso pan with a fixed pick-up. The pump is always a stock (NAPA) with a standard pressure spring. I use 1/2 groove mains with all of my 511's. The lifter bores are never bushed and I don't restrict any oil galleys. In other words I run as close to a stock oiling system as you can get. I had a 499 toss a rod after only 4 runs a year ago which still puzzles me. That one appeared to have spun a rod bearing early on (#3). #6 was also on its way out but the rest of them looked fine. There was an issue with the Moroso pan & pick-up though. I had made one run with that pan on my T-Bird and it hit the ground hard past the finish line. It's possible that there was insufficient clearance between the pick-up and the bottom of the pan which had been caved in a bit. To make matters worse (REALLY DUMB!) I only had an oil pressure gauge under the hood. My son suggested that the engine should be making more power (only 146 mph in Super Street) but I just shrugged it off. For what its worth that engine had full groove mains because that's what I had laying around when I built it. I have been running all of my 511's (2.750 mains) with 1/2 groove bearings and stock oil pumps and the bearings look real good. The mains look MUCH better with the 1/2 groove then they ever did with the full groove type. I generally run 10-40 oil in cool weather and 20-50 in the summer. Oil pressure is typically 40-50 psi, hot, in gear, at idle.
P.S. With the 440, which had preceded the B-1's in the Cuda, I used a stock pan, pump & pick-up.
Here's the pan (at the track).

& the 440 (same day).

I, too, believe that rpm is the factor one should use, rather than hp.

We run a Hemi in Nostalgia SS, and use an out of the box Milodon 7qt pan, modified Mopar windage tray, and the Milodon 1/2 internal pickup, stock replacement bolt ons.

We run the motor to 6500, and it stripes about 6700 with a TRW high volume pump. The motor is clearanced loose, that is the way I like 'em, and we use Valvoline 50W in the heat of the summer. It holds about 65lbs through the pass, and we have never had a lick of bearing problems.

too high pressure is hard on bearings.30 at idle,80 at 7000 is plenty.

when it was a 448 it had an external single line Milodon with no problems...it was making a bit over 500hp on the rear wheels.....the new 499 uses an external dual line Milodon with no problems...
