Who has milled their Stealths?

Who has milled their Stealths? - 05/02/09 02:36 PM

How much did you take off? What is your compression ratio? Chamber volume?

As it stands right now, if I bolt my Stealths on my 383 (.030 over, slug .035 in the hole) I'm at 8.8:1. This is basically a stock spec street motor with a .450 lift cam; very mild. I got the Stealths becasue of their affordability and close resemblance to a stock casting more so than their added performance. I'm just wondering if I should mill them or run them as is.

my motor is still at the machine shop. is a 440 with stealth heads. i think they milled the heads .050 use fel -pro 1105 gaskets
now it is 78cc and compression 10.6 to 1. i will have all the paperwork next week after the dyno.

I left mine unmilled for a 84cc chamber (confirmed). This with my pistons at zero deck and a .045 gasket gives me a CR of 10.0 to 1 which is what I was shooting for with my cam combo and pump swill.

Thanks. What gas are you planning to use?

Milled .075 started at 84 cc now 72 cc. We had to take .095 o9ff the intake side.I would take half of the head and then the rest off the intake manifold,

i would use 93 octane .

Wow....using a web based milling calculator, it would only take .040 to get them down to 72cc. Based on my calculations, milling them .075 would give you 62cc chambers. What's your compression ratio? 440 or 383?

Was that calculator based on a typical Mopar chamber? cause the Stealths taper quite a bit more than say a 915..

Does that mean more material has to be removed to obtain a certain chamber volume?

I think do to the chamber shape the first .025 would probably be more cc's than a std head but by .035 you'd need to take more material to get the same effect... BTW This is just a guess based on my visual impression of the chamber shape..

cc'd mine at 86/7.milled down for 78cc

milled mine .075" and got 72cc for 12:1 w/flat tops

We cc the head 3 times. Once before and then at .045 and then at .075. Kind of suprised me too.We figure about 11.5 or 12 to 1 compression.Block at zero and flat top pistons at .005 out.

I would do something to get the CR up higher, unless you insist on running 87 octane. A piston to get zero deck would have been the best choice, but you have to do with what you got. IMO, a 10.0 CR, aluminum head, mild perf cam should be able to run on 92 octane or less.

i got a set of the cnc stealths. the chambers were all over the place- 83 to 85.5. i equalised them at 85.5 and had them milled .040 and they measured 76 cc if i remember.

Did you have to shave the intake? How much did it cost you to have the heads milled?

Re: Who has milled their Stealths? - 05/04/09 05:31 PM

the machinist i took it to charged me about 70.00. he said he prefers to shave the intake only, to compensate, not the intake side of the heads. not the way i would do it, but, hey, making your machinist irritated seems like a really bad idea, you know?

How much did he take off the intake?

Re: Who has milled their Stealths? - 05/04/09 08:45 PM

he didn't take any off of the intake face of the heads, and i haven't mocked up the intake yet- it'll be a couple of weeks. the block was decked .025, btw. i can pm you with the results, if you like?

That would be great, thanks!

Milled 0.050" to get at 75cc chambers.
Now at 9.3:1 with a +0.030 383 with pistons 0.040 down.

I know they're not stealths but I did the same on my edelbrocks for my 496" to put me at 10.6:1. Went from advertised 84cc chambers down to a measured 74cc at -.050

My machinist also opted for machining my intake rather than the intake side of the heads. I think this is so you don't reduce the v/c surface (not that I think it'd be a big deal but w/e). Intakes are cheaper than heads at any rate

The formula for how much to remove from the intake side per .01 off the head is here in the forums, I believe it's like .012 or .013 per .010 off the deck but you should double check... My math is probably wrong
