Trailer tires

Anyone one here change from load range "E" trailer tires (10 ply) to a LR "G" (14 ply) on a 16" wheel? I have a 48' LQ gooseneck trailer w/ 3 6K axles & LR E tires that are about 5 1/2 years old. I going to replace them. I'm looking at a LR "G", 14 ply all steel radial. They also run at a higher pressure than the old tires, 110psi compared to 80psi. Just curious if anyone has done this and what were the results? Less problems, longer wear, shake the race car and trailer apart? Worth it or not?

I did it on my 30ft trailer 15 inch wheels .

The 10 ply would start blowing out after 2 years haven't had one go bad in 3 now .

If you run the tires at their max pressure you may have rim cracking issues, Ive been down that road, rims have a max pressure rating just like the tires, this happened to me on a fifth wheel camper toyhauler.

I switched to Hercules H901 tires on every trailer I own and have never had an issue regardless of how old the tires are. They are a commercial grade regroovable trailer tire. They do run at a higher pressure so check your wheels. Well worth the investment.

Like Wyo mentioned….. rims are rated too. Pretty sure we’re dancing with the devil in that aspect as we have 6 lug rims. We switched to Greenball Towmaster ASC back in 2019 on our 28ft box (11k approx). Best move in tires ever for us ever. 78mph rating, haven’t lost one yet. Old “E” rated tires would usually give us issues after two years. We run them at 90psi cold as we often run in some extreme heat at times. One thing we did start doing with these tires was to remove them when it starts to get hot. Huge pita, but our boat being stored inside taught us a thing or two about tire life .

I replaced my old 10 plys with 14 plys on my 28' box trailer a couple years ago. So far, so good.

Just because they have a maximum inflation rating of 110, doesn't mean you have to fill them that high. The pressure should be commensurate with the load. I run mine at 80 when loaded, 55 empty. Watch the tread wear pattern as a guide. Wear in the center means you have too much pressure and edge wear means too little pressure.

Tire load carrying capacity is based on the air pressure and volume.

Trailer has steel wheels and I don't find any indication of load capacity on them. I also have good valve stems (not rubber). What brand of 14 ply tires do you run? It looks like a LOT of them are still made in China? The tires that are on there now are made in China (Trailer King RST 235/80r16, LR E speed rated M-81 mph)

FWIW, the only USA made trailer tire, that I can find, is the Goodyear Endurance tire. If it matters to ya'.

Knock on wood My current Maxxis brand E rated 215x75x15 inch trailer tires are going on their fifth year, maybe their 6th year CRS on the exact ear

I used it this weekend to go to Madras Drags, around 45 to 50 miles north of me, used it last winter to go from Bend, OR to Glendale, AZ to buy a bracket car for my youngest granddaughter and her Husband to learn to drag race in with those tires on the 24 Ft. Pace shadow enclosed car trailer, it weighed 8650 Lbs. on the axles the last time I weighed it with my old pump gas Duster in it, I hope they like drag racing

I run Light truck tires on all my trailers, got sick and tired of blow outs. the LT tires have run for years with no blow outs.
