Bogus Valve Adjuster - WTH ?

Bogus Valve Adjuster - WTH ? - 04/08/24 02:29 AM

Something I've never seen before...
This is a 340 with 273 rockers & hydraulic FT cam.
Seems to run OK, no noises, etc, but pulled the left valve cover to fix a gasket leak, and found this.
It's the only one, but needs replacement, if I can find one that'll match the others.
Seems like a lot of thread on the others, though...

Smith bros or manton and replace all of them in the correct length.

I believe the adjuster WITHOUT the locking nut is the OEM adjuster. They are an interference fit designed to not use a locking nut. The others are an aftermarket replacement with the familiar adjusting screw with locking/lockdown nut. As mentioned, replace them all with Smith Bros components. Maybe ensure the surface the locking nut will seat down onto is filed down flat so the nut is not forced to seat against an irregular surface.

That's what I think. Those look like 1-1/2" and that's too long. Get a set of 1-1/4". And these new ones will have a larger hex in the end. Mo better.

iagree The one oddball adjuster there is the factory original adjuster for those rockers.

Thanks, guys - guess I've never paid attention to stock 273 adjusters.
Looks rather comical...as does the height of the other adjusters, for that matter.
Sometimes, one just wonders...what were they thinking ?

And when the interference fit becomes loose, only way to save the rocker is to run a tap through the threads and use an adjuster that needs a locknut.

I've had to do that before.Setting valves late at night before a race and broke the adjusting screw while tightening the nut.Put the screw in, but didn't like how it felt. I changed that rocker out for an old one I had on the bench. Worked just fine in a pinch.

Thankfully, the mini-me screw came out smoothly.
No other sign of buggery, hope they didn't drop the proper hardware into the machinery shruggy
I'll make that adjuster available as a genuine original MoPar part for that last correct-numbers-and-codes detail laugh2

Smith Bros to the rescue...

It's the amount of adjuster sticking out the bottom that really matters.
