Fan clutch bolts - 03/08/24 06:55 PM
Finally got my new fan clutch and plan on installing it and the fan this weekend. I have been reading posts here and elsewhere about what bolts to use. I was planning on using 5/16-18 x 3/4" factory bolts that have the captive washers on them that i have in my bolt collection. Some of the things I've read refer to place bolts for the clutch to the water pump and studs/nuts with conical washers for the fan to the clutch. While I recognized the head design, I never heard the term place bolt before. Are they really necessary? I have had about 30 Mopars over the years and don't recall ever seeing or using place bolts on any of my fan clutches before. I've always just used the factory bolts with the captive washers. As far as the fan to the clutch, I have had them with both bolts and studs.

I just took a fan clutch off of a very original car that hadn't been started in 28 years this weekend and yes it had place bolts. Like it should. Factory bolts with SEMS washers (captured) are sexy but I've never seen any there.

Maybe I should clarify. I didn't remove the clutch from the fan, I took them both off at once. The bolts holding the fan on were the place bolts.

And notice that undercut under the head. That's part of the magic. I'll try to find that sheet about place bolts. They're sexy. But then again I like bolts.

Right or wrong, these are the bolts that I am using.
