Had them in my 2 Dailies, used them in winter when they sat outside - worked fine.
Buddy has one in his racecar, no problems.
I think they're a good idea, as is an oilpan heater, which I've had in the racecar.

I like the ones that go in the lower radiator hose better. If it happens to fail it's easier to replace too.

I had a 1978 Dodge truck with a 440 engine that had core plug heaters. It really helped get that old beast started in the winter. Without the block heaters it would not start once the temp was down around freezing. They'll work just fine on a race engine but you do have to plug them in a couple of hours before you start the engine. They take a while to heat things up.

Up here we use them in everything, except some new diesels don't come with a block heater for some reason. I have never had one leak, just burn out. In the trucks we always ran 2, and we ran the 600w ones, one in each side, which is about as much as single receptacle can handle. 1200w/120v=10 amps.

Friends wifes car was hard starting in cold weather. Put a lower radiator hose heater on it. Car then started fine, and blew warm air out of vents when she left for work. Only works if hose doesn't have a spot that traps air in it though.

Do you install them with any rtv or just lube the o ring.

I want to say they have an o-ring on them and go in dry? If you do use one of the block type do yourself a favor and pick a spot that is easy to access, and not buried behind a motor mount or the headers. Also the plugs may not fit in just any hole depending on where the cylinder is behind the freeze plug opening. I tried putting one in a siamese bore 400 sbc years ago and could not get it to fit so I had to use the lower radiator hose type instead.
