Long time, no post.

Took my 19 y/o daughter (and my 6 y/o son) out to the annual Mopar track day. It's one of my daughters favourite things to do, when it comes around.
It always psyches me up to work on my car, but I rarely get around to it.
Car is a '67 Belvedere with a 505" spec'd out by Dan from Performance Only, nearly 20 years ago now:
Engine is a E-headed (stage 1? port by Dan), 10.4:1 505", 0.587/0.593 287/294 cam, M1 intake and 1050 Dominator (8896). Dominator has been converted from 3 to 2- circuit with QuickFuel metering plates. It was an impressive engine 15 or so years ago...seems much less so now. Callies Crank, Oliver Rods, Diamond Pistons.
Mopar 175K converter (~2800RPM) and 3.55 rear end.

Best it ran (in the past) was 12.5 @ 118 and that was on ~8 year old cheap firestone 205/70/14 street tires, that were only ever meant to be temporary.

So, the Dominator has always been a bit of a challenge. Needs another rebuild now, but always had a few little glitches/oddities from day that always had me thinking it was faulty in some way.
I think back to the simple days of running a low-comp 440 with a 650 AFB.

I'm sure I'm answering my own question here, is it worth getting stuck back into it and persevering with the Dominator, or do I look at changing for something more 'streetable'?
For many years, I've often thought that something like a Quickfuel 950 might be a good compromise. I'd imagine that I wouldn't lose too much performance, but maybe gain more 'street'.
But then, it looks like I don't need to spend a whole lot more to go to a Holley Sniper set up (although, I could be mis-reading that).

I'm using a Quickfuel 1050 annular and it runs very well. It's a 4150 carb and I think a 950 would run just as well but I got this one with some other parts in a trade.

I have almost identical engine, stroker kit from Dan with e-heads. Had a Quickfuel 950 and changed to Holley Terminator X this year.
If you don't get the Sniper ign. price is not much more

Ray Barton used to offer 528 (and 572) Hemi's on his website. Single 850 cfm 4 barrel, pump gas, flat tappet, 800 horsepower. Impressive. I'm wondering, why not a bigger carb on a motor so large? I mean a stock 426 Hemi supposedly has 1200 cfm. So a 572 would have to have over 1500 right? So I asked him, why such a small carb? He said, it's because I've never found anybody that can tune a Dominator. I found that interesting.

By the way, you wouldn't want to try to build your engine today. Callies wants $3,500 for a crank and USA made rods are around $2,800. Plus freight and tax of course. So around $7,000. Enjoy your car.

I would try and sell that 8896 and find an early Holley List # 9375 Dominator, they work great on a single 4500 intake on motors like you built with the stock jetting scope up
I've used a bunch of them,9375 (the 8896 didn't work anywhere as good as the 9375 did) on many motors with great success, many guys that I let drive those cars were impressed with how good they worked work scope wrench

the 8082 is ok to but those 3-circuit 8896 I don't like.

after reading the original post again though the 850 vacuum 80531 would be a good bet.

Sometimes the old school stuff is the right choice.

I still like a 4781 for a hot street BB, although I don’t think I know of anyone who’s bought a new one in over 10 years.
The shiny stuff is pretty hard to resist.

Call up Dom (thumper carbs) and have him build you a custom dominator. Sell your current carb to help cover the cost.
I messed w/ an 8896 for a lil while and never got it to clean up.
I have an old 9375 that's better, but it is dead rich at cruising speed on the highway.
I have a Pro Systems 1200 cfm dominator on my hemi that's awesome. Been running it since 2006. Some people don't care for Pro Systems, but I've had good luck w/ them.

I spent a lot of time and effort tuning the 8896 - converted it to two circuit with the quickfuel metering plates, spent a LOT of time playing with restrictors, bleeds etc (I have it all written down somewhere). According to my old LM-1 o2 meter, it's actually (or was) pretty spot on in the end.
To be honest, it's the little things that bug me. Eg, once warmed up, if I stop for fuel, the engine seems to flood. Need to hold the throttle open to fire it up. And something that may or may not be related - I have a steep driveway that I need to reverse out of. Unless I gun it out, almost frying the tires, it'll stall. Even if I ride the brakes to keep the RPM up, it seems to stall. Again, kinda like it's flooding when the engine is on that angle.

Picking up an older 2-circuit Dominator, seems a little more challenging. I live in Australia, and a quick look on the on the usual online used marketplaces, the sellers seem to ask crazy prices for them - whether they get those prices is a different question.

And connect the vents with a piece of fuel line with a cut in the top.

If you don’t have one yet, I’d suggest getting a wide band A/F gauge set up in the car, so you can see what’s really going on under various conditions.
