Index race Q UPDATE

Index race Q UPDATE - 07/23/23 11:39 AM

I'm interested in running an index race at my local track. Reading the rules it states there are 2 qualifying rounds, no time runs.
I guess I'm asking how they build a run ladder from this and what I should be doing in these rounds. This is new to me and don't want to learn the hard way.
I'll be running 11.50

No Idea how they can get a qualifying ladder from a no time run ? So i'm going to guess it's just not displayed and still timed. It's the only way to get a qualifying ladder as far as I know, unless it's out of the hat ? shruggy

Normally at an index race the closest run to the index without going under will be the #1 qualifier and so on. I don't know what they mean about no time.

Correct ... I run 11.50 Index .... closest to 11.50 say for instance you run 11.500 that would be the absolute closest you could get then someone runs 11.501 then they would be number 2 . Welcome to Index racing its a blast I really enjoy it. If you have any other questions send me a pm I would be glad to help. I have been running it for over 10 years and have pretty good success winning two track championships that way . Just to add : I have tried the E Z plate system as well as the Willys adjustable blade throttle stops and found they both killed to much MPH for my liking , I use a modified Moroso stop that bolts to the rear left carb stud it simply limits the throttle movement , on my application my secondaries are barely opening ... turn the stop back to go faster forward to go slower.

The qualifying rounds are your time runs.

What does your car normally run? How do plan on adjusting your car to index? Do you have a weather station? I use weight for adjustment in the .15 range of ET. More than that Iv'e shut the carbs down a bit or pulled timing. As an example; We tested last Wednesday at Milan and ran 9.06 and 9.03. The pulled the timing back from 35 to 27 total. That netted two 9.13's and a 9.118. That got me close enough by looking at weather forcasts to go to NMCA's race at US131 to run the 9.25 index. Based on weather when we showed up Friday we added 92lbs with the timing pulled. Car ran 9.252 on the first hit. Added 10lbs for the 2nd hit. The oil was a little warmer and the 60 ft was .012 quicker. Those two items pushed us under a bit to a 9.227. 3rd hit the weather changed a bit so we pulled 20lbs. This time there were two additional factors. Swirling wind changed from right head to right rear which picked us up, but the 60 ft fell off. It was getting a little dew out. Lucked into a 9.254. Next morning 60 ft picked up .01 from the previous mornings time. Weather was almost identical to the previous morning. So we were back at 97 lbs. Ran a 9.230. 60ft was worth .01 that would've pushed us back to a theoritical 9.240. But I missed the weather by .01. First rd Sunday we get no time hit. The weather was a little poorer so we were down to 77lbs. I ran it out to a 9.244 after red lighting. Missed it again by a bit. We do this all with no electronics, no trans brake, no starting line chip and no air shift. These ET's were over a period of 3 days. Anyway maybe this will give you somewhat of an idea.

Doug

My car usually runs around 11.0 -11 teens. It's a stock 2015 Challenger Hellcat.
Last week I added 180 lbs of sand, came in off the street hot, 2nd gear start on the A8, and went 11.57
Next run it had cooled a little, 1st gear start, went 11.45.
Big gap till next run, 1st gear again, barely up to temp, went 11.35.

Historically, heat slows these cars down (been there on 90 plus degree days) and I think I have to keep it at operating temperature with a little bit of ballast to do this dance. No weather station.

I guess I get the closest to 11.50 without going under to qualify I get. If you go under are you out when qualifying or at the bottom?

At the bottom but still qualified in most cases .. I didn't know you were running a late model Challenger it appears my type throttle stop won't work in your application

The qualifying runs are "No Time Runs" according to the rules. Just wondering how they get a ladder ?

The tower/track still sees your times (even though it's a "no time" run) and the track officials set up the ladder from that. They just turn the scoreboards off. That's how it's done here anyway.
"No time" just means the scoreboards are turned off and the timeslips get cut in half at the ticket booth.

I see. You think they would state "no time will be displayed". I don't see how this matters, if the break is XX.50 and you are not to go under it in qualifying or eliminations, what's the advantage?
Thanks everyone for your responses!

Thanks Chip, clears things up, though there's nothing to stop racers comparing tickets in the pits.
One more Q, when the ladder is printed off, do they show who ran what and where they qualified ? It's been known for our track to get the ladder wrong, though it is rare.

Re: Index race Q - 07/25/23 05:41 PM

The "No Time Runs" means No Time Trials outside of the 2 Qualifiers.
The link said "all run" so going under just puts you at the bottom, not out.

Good Luck

iagree I replied to some of the comments w/o looking at the link in the original post. There's nothing "no time" about this race, lol. You get two qualifying passes and nothing else before the race...literally means you don't get any test runs.

"No time" races are a big thing around here...hence the confusion on my part. Grudge racing is obviously no time, but there are shootouts that some grudge cars will enter that are no time.

Re: Index race Q - 07/26/23 02:35 AM

For the NSS classes that I run in you do not really get any time runs prior to the race on race day. Test and tune the night before and you should know where you fit in. On race day we have to claim out index before the first qualifier run but if you see you are nowhere close then you can change your index within 30 minutes. Once you do that you are locked into that index for that race day.

(UPDATE)
Well after 2 rainouts they finally had the race along with other cancelled races. LONG day
I was first in line for qualifying and first mistake was forgetting this race was on a pro tree. So, very caught off guard but went 11.51 anyway.
2nd qualifying went a bit better but but was still late. Went 11.47
Round one still way late and lost. Think it went 11.46.
Anticipating the light seems difficult and there's not much opportunity to practice. frowwn

Is your Pro Tree NHRA style or instant green?
Years ago AHRA tried using a instant green, talk about embarrassing reaction times whistling grin shruggy

Re: Index race Q - 08/22/23 11:23 AM

I've been trying to run Open Comp this year with a .500 pro tree. It's been a struggle. On the practice tree with the same rollout there is no issue. In the car is another story. Of course I have a total of about 15 passes on the pro tree.

Re: Index race Q - 08/22/23 07:00 PM

I race in NHRA division 7 for many years, they decided back in the early 1980s that their Pro Tree for both Super Pro and Pro bracket races would use a four tenths Pro Tree, not the standard .500 tree we see now at the races shruggy
All the other divisions use the .500 Pro Tree confused
