Anyone have experience supercharging a slant six?

Anyone have experience supercharging a slant six? - 05/18/23 04:46 PM

Maybe this isn't the correct forum, if so my apologies. I recently saw that there are supercharger kits available for slant sixes from TorqStorm. Does anyone have any experience with these? The information given indicates that with EFI or a blow through carb it can show 50% power increases, along with several other modifications to the fuel system (electric pump) and modified ignition timing. Getting a V8 would probably be the easier choice but these little engines are cool and to be able to make 200=250 hp with a slant would be unique.

Does the bottom end have the strength to handle that additional boost pressure and fuel? I have read that there isn't really room to bore out the cylinders, which limits displacement but they are really heavy and strong because they were originally designed to be made from aluminum.

Has anyone seen these in person?

A buddy of mine has a 68 Dart with a Torqstorm and efi he just put together. He had it running for 3 weeks, then drove from Virginia to Missouri to race, won 2 rsces, and drove home with no issues. Car ran 13:20s.

He is on www.slantsix.org as Dart270. He's documented it well.

The Slant bottom end really doesn't need much. They're pretty tough to start with. You can easily bore them +.100", I know of some that have gone +.190" after sonic checking.

The bad part is the head sucks. But with a blower that isn't such a big issue.

Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out. I looked around on the internet for build info but I missed that thread.

It seems like having EFI, electronic timing, fuel pressure regulation, and boost would really make the car drive better overall, even if you weren’t racing or hot rodding around.

Someone, maybe on here, did that years ago, I think it made around 230 HP. same as a stock poly 318 two barrel motor makes shruggy work
Not my cup of progress tsk work whistling

Dave Evans in Minnesota built one with a 4-71 in the late 90s. It dyno'd at 425 on pump gas. Another guy in Minnesota now has it in a rat rod.

Steve Nitti, also from Minnesota has a gorgeous 72 Duster with a Procharger on it. It went 10.57@126 at Mokan last month. Car weighs 3200 w/driver.

I was reading 'watsonwerks' build and test thread on SlantSix Forum, still reading the one you mentioned. It sounds like 4-6 psi of boost really warms up the engine....14-15 pounds would theoretically double the horsepower if the exhaust, fuel, were set up to match. That's a lot of power from a slant! I have been enjoying reading up on the threads there..I'm learning a lot, plenty of good info. Thanks again!

That's Wes Alumbaugh's old Valiant. It was a gorgeous car, but $36K??????

Building your own kit is always an option. Aussie Speed sells manifolds now for the /6. An Eaton M90 would be perfect on a /6 and can be had for $150 pulled off of 3800 series GM motors. Aussie Speed manifold is about $750 I think.

The block begins to fail above 400 hp.
If that's enough, go for it.

How many main caps do they come with?
Isn't it 4 or 5? Not 7, correct work
I knew a kid in high school who had a aluminum four barrel slant six four barrel motor with a 4 speed manual tranny in a 1960-1961 Valient or what ever the first year compacts were called back then. It ran oaky but I don't think it was halfway fast shruggy confused

Slants have 4 mains. The only ones I know of that even broke a crank either hydrauliced a cylinder spraying on alcohol, or trying to spray a turbo motor.

Mike Jeffrey was making well over 400 on spray and never even nicked a main bearing.

We have turbo guys making north of 500 and the only thing they've eaten were pistons.

The motor I just took out of my car has the light cast crank in it with stock rods. I wasn't making a lot of power (250ish) but turned 6300 regularly. I had 0 bottom end issues.

People have told me for 25 years Slants can't live with only 4 mains. I have never hurt a bearing even when I was spraying. I was only making 375 though.......

IIRC none of the Hyper-Pack engines were aluminum blocks.
The 170" was 148 hp, 225" 195.

You do realize that other then the 7 170ci NASCAR Compact Valiants there were no Hyper-Pak motors, right? The H-P program was an over the counter kit Chrysler had to make available so the Valiants were legal.

This is such fun

I didn't provide every single known fact, therefore my comment is wrong? Take 5 minutes, tell me everything you know.

I'll make it real easy. How many Slant motors or any Mopar have you built and raced? You're always trolling people telling them how little they know and their stuff is junk.

Thanks for posting pics...that looks like a nice setup. I wonder if there would be a way to keep power steering with the supercharger.

Why add that weight onto the front of the car instead of putting a larger diameter steering wheel on it work scope up twocents

Re: Anyone have experience supercharging a slant six? - 05/23/23 11:27 AM

The 62 Valiant is a good car that should run 10:60's and not eat parts when lined out. The new owner wanted to drive the valiant to a car show and it was explained that he should not do that as it is a race car.
The seller bought the car at auction and can't even transfer the correct information from a written sheet he was provided to the ad he wrote.
I have owned the car in the past but not the one who took the valiant to auction.
I bet $15,000.00 or less will buy it now. The seller would be making a good profit if it sells for that.
I hope someone buys it that knows what is going on.
