KOS race Rockingham 5/13/23...NEW VIDEO ADDED - 05/15/23 03:11 PM

Ran the KOS race at Rockingham this past weekend. We had 8 cars in the race. There were a couple more that broke testing the day before.
My test run that morning didn't quite go as planned. Big wheelie, had to pedal, but no damage. Was running Lenny Melton driving Patrick Calvey's '70 road runner. It is Tony Scopa's old car from the old KOS days. He treed me bad...it had been over a year since I put the car in the beams, lol.
video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dh4eZ7EL2I
fast fwd to 1 hour 57 minutes. It's a long video.

I lost first round to a low 8 sec hellcat. I made a stupid mistake and didn't put a fresh bottle in the car after my test run. Made a shock adjustment and kept the front down, but it was just slow.
I brought 4 bottles to the track and forgot that one of them only had enough for one hit. Of course that's the one I grabbed to put in the car that morning. rolleyes After my first test run, I didn't change it out b/c I thought it should be good for another pass. Oh well.
I'm very outclassed in this race, but it's still fun to do. My car was 3760 lbs w/ me in it at the track scales on Saturday. Pretty sure my combo could be 2900 lbs by the rules or something like that, lol. I could remove the motor and still be overweight.
Still had fun even though the racing didn't quite work out the way I hoped. Family was there and had a great time.
Leon Hudson (very fast '65 cuda) won the race over track owner Dan VanHorn (very fast hellcat).

Looks like Tony Scopa's old Road Runner in the other lane.

You don't look that outclassed at the finish line. Ever thought of hanging 10-15 pounds of lead in the nose of that thing for the sake of trying it?

Re: KOS race Rockingham 5/13/23 - 05/16/23 12:48 PM

Doug...that was a .3 sec delay and a 1.4 sec ramp from 10%. It just has way too much SLR. The last time I ran the car I had my full exhaust system on it, which really hurts the lowend torque. This time I just had the bullets off the collectors and the difference in lowend torque is crazy. This same "tuneup" w/ the quiet exhaust pulled a 2-3' wheelie and just carried it out 150-200 feet in much better air conditions. I knew the short exhaust would be faster, but I wasn't expecting that big of a difference.

smalltyredart...The fastest cars are at least 1/2 sec quicker than mine to the 1/8. I was running that lime RR down, but Lenny is still sorting out that car. I have definitely thought of adding nose weight, but I still have more shock adjustments and limiters to try. I don't get to the track much at all to run the car anymore, so I'm still sorting it out even though it's been years, lol.

Clocks off. Apparently there are some big money grudge racers that run at these events (not sure where) that are scared someone will see their times and put a severe damper on their income for the remainder of the season. rolleyes

8 cars seems like a decent turnout. It’d be a fun class to be competitive in.

I heard 9 cars which stinks especially at a no clocks event. That would have a bye run in every round till the final.

Re: KOS race Rockingham 5/13/23 - 05/16/23 03:53 PM

8 cars, not 9.
1. Chip Owens (blue '70 cuda, 575" hemi on nitrous)
2. Lenny Melton (lime green '70 road runner, 572" wedge on nitrous) Tony Scopa's old KOS car from NY, now owned by Patrick Calvey
3. Leon Hudson (black '65 cuda, 440" R5P7 SB on nitrous) same car he's always run in KOS
4. David Robinson (silver Duster, BB wedge turbo)
5. Sheila Bowman (black '72 cuda, BB wedge on nitrous) Same black cuda they've always run in KOS, just a lot different now
6. David Smith (burgundy '75 Duster, BB wedge on nitrous) Roger Laudy's old KOS car
7. Dan VanHorn (black Hellcat, G3 hemi turbo)
8. Andy Wagner (black/blue/white lettered up Hellcat, G3 hemi supercharged)

There was a lime green duster that broke the transmission on Friday testing. Not sure what his name is or the combo.
Chris Dufresne has a twin turbo Gen 3 hemi in a '64 dodge I think. Pretty sure he came in too light.

I saw bits and pieces scanning thru this video but i didn't realize it was a Mopar only race? What are the class rules? It's good to hear some of these old names are still around!

The list is a bit of a blast from the past.

Well it looked fun and any day you can make Lenny think he hears footsteps behind him is a good day.

Re: KOS race Rockingham 5/13/23 - 05/16/23 08:54 PM

Agreed, that list is definitely a blast from the past! I remember seeing almost all of those cars in the various mopar mags in the 90's/early 2000's. Super cool.

Awesome job on saving it from hitting the bumper. It got soooooo close to touching!

New video showing a few different angles.
The nitrous tune was very rich. Found that issue last night and corrected it. Hoping to go to Darlington on 6/2 to get a 1/4 mile time on the car.

Time to slow the front end rise time down, huh up whistling work
What type of socks are you running on the car now, front and back?

Yes. I've been sneaking up on it every time I get to the track. It has DA Viking shocks on it. They were 4 clicks (front) from full tight in the video...clearly not enough for the ramp I had in it. There were a few things going on that were working against me on this pass. That's what happens when I only get this car to the track once a year in the past 2 or 3 years, lol.

Fastest cars are running in high 4s.
Don't have the rules handy, but mainly 29.5x10.5 or 315 radial max.
stock firewall and front frame rails.
one power adder only
stock style/appearing dash
There are minimum weights based on combos

hi Chip(an8sec70cuda)

Is there anything online for a base set of rules or guidelines a car needs to meet to race KOS. it is such a cool class. other than having a fast a$$ car that can be driven on the street.

Being street legal has nothing to do w/ it, unfortunately. But I get it...it's already hard to get cars to fill this class. Requiring them to be street legal would limit it even further.
I like the class b/c of what it was back in the '90s and early 2000s. Cars like that aren't that common anymore.

Wes...thankyou! I know I'm at a huge disadvantage, but it's just fun to go and race. I have no interest in building my car to fit a class...only to run a class it sort of fits in as long as I'm competitive enough to not get embarrassed, lol.

JohnRR...thanks, I think, lol. Sure Miss ole Fred. angel
