CAMS

We have been running this motor combo for about 8 seasons, It is a 572 with 572-13 heads ported by the late jeff k from modern,it has 2 800 edelbrocks on indy crossram, 15.4 comp, made 983@7000 and 817 tq@5500. Car is a 9.00@148 @3650 lbs 4.30 gear 10.5x31w. Last year we broke a lifter and damaged the cam. We have another cam on the shelf and thinking of using it as to not having to buy another new one since cores also are a problem. here are the specs for the cams. first the damaged cam 278/290 .480 .480 113 ls inst@109. The cam on the shelf is 283/300 ,496 .471 115 ls inst @113. We have both 1.6 rockers and 1.7 rockers to use. Also we run it on q16 fuel. What are your thoughts on that cam change .Thanks jake

If the lobe family is the same then it shouldn't be much of a change. If the lobe family is different then you might see an improvement or perhaps a problem. The additional intake lift might cause you an issue so you'll need to double check that for sure. I've done a lot of cam testing and what I've learned is that it is almost impossible to guess what a slightly different cam will do in an engine. The interaction between the intake runners, head porting, exhaust system and the cam lobe is too complex to fully understand.

Yep sometimes you never know. A good engine simulation with good info imputed is the best bet to try and understand what will happen. And I don't just look at max HP and Torque, I look at average HP and Torque, predicted cylinder pressure, volumetric efficiency, and where it happens at.

Respectfully, I think that's a change that will be noticeable. Obviously it might require new support valvegear. It made GOOD power with the old cam, I might regrind the new one. I have a 'spare' 55mm 4/7 swap 114lsa that is in between but still has .480 lobes...

Second cam spec sounds real familiar. I would think it would pick up a lil power with the second cam.
