Crankcase Evacuation Pump Plumbing into Lifter Valley

I am considering plumbing my GZ motorsports vacuum pump into the valley tray instead of the valve covers.

My main concern is how much oil vapor will be present. Will there be too much and cause issues with filling up the catch can, or will there be too little and oil starve the pump.

I am using an old Barton cross ram with end plates welded in to eliminate the valley pan. The engine is a 10.4" deck 426" Hemi built to turn north of 8500rpm. I am using Barton rockers and the Barton valve covers to match them. I know piping to the front of the valve covers is preferred. Going directly to the front of the intake plate will keep me from having to hack up these valve covers, and it will give me a -10 fitting right on the front of the engine that I could put a bore scope through to check out the lifters and valley tray.

I think it will pull in gallons of oil so just start with it on a valve cover

Not sure what kind of look you are going for but I bought an oil cap standoff, cut it down and welded it to the valve cover (from underneath). Put baffle back in place under it and welded an A/N fitting to the side.

Works perfect.

That looks very good. Super clean install. I will have to remember that for my street cars.

This one is race only for my 68 Barracuda, and with the motor plate, clear view oil filter system, vacuum pump ect.. I am looking more at function than show car good looks.

The only way you can make that work is if you build a big baffle system in the valley. If you just have a hole drilled into the valley without an extensive baffle setup then you'll suck a bunch of oil into the puke can. The baffle system will need to look like a muffler. A can with baffles stuffed with steel wool.

I tried it in the valley on my Hemi even using a Moroso vacuum pump fitting. It still filled my over flow tank on the first dyno pull. Had to move the fitting into the valve cover.

I agree with AndyF, you need a labyrinth intake inside the valley, there are smog fittings with internal baffles that will save lots of work

I have the Edelbrock victor Jr. heads, so it has a separate valley pan, from the intake. I hooked my vacuum pump in the valley pan just to kind of hide the line, it is a NSS car trying to keep the old school look. I took a piece of aluminum and made a baffle where the line plumbed in. Just drilled a bunch of 1/16 holes and spaced it so the line could draw air. I get just a couple ounces in the catch can after each run. I have some guys tell me their setups don't pull any oil in the catch can, but I have never had that happen in the valve cover or the valley.

Mine pulls from here. 4-5 oz after 25 -30 passes with a GZ pump. No baffle. I tried the fuel pump block off plate earlier. Since it's a Jessel with no timing chain in the cover. It filled the resivour the 1st time I started it in the garage in about 10 minutes of run time.

I suspected that it may cause problems in the valley but it never hurts to ask. I had already talked it over with a friend and he had the same concern. We thought about ways to mitigate the oil draw but without knowing how much oil we would be dealing with, I figured I would throw it out there to see if any of you had tried it.

I run NSS/FX with it but have always run a wedge in the past with header evac to each valve cover.

I will go ahead and put a bung in the valve cover. The Barton valve covers are drilled for breathers, but they are towards the back so I will block those off and weld in a bung up front.

Do you have any mock up pics of your GZ pump brackets? It looks like yours sits much lower than mine does.

You should add a baffle under the hole. Splashed oil will get pulled out.

I plan on it, The problem is there is very little room with the rocker gear inside these covers. Looks like my weekend plans have been decided!
