Oberg filter

I am going to use an external single line milodon on the new engine with the swinging pickup (block one of the lines). I am wanting to run some kind of filter between the pan and the pump and have noticed you can pick up a used Oberg filter pretty cheap. I was curious if the Oberg filter had to be mounted or can it simply dangle between the lines. I run my fuel regulator dangling and I have convinced myself it aerates the fuel less now.

I wouldn't do that
I have used the original Obergs since day one and one of the newer larger ones past the oil pump. They work well that way but there is no way I would try and suck oil through one of them from a Mopar BB oil pump
I have used both a #10 and #12 AN 100 micron filters (cleanable stainless-steel screen) in the pick-up lines on several BB Mopar Milidon dual line swinging oil pick up systems

I am using the Milodon oil pump with the front entrance and a stock cover with -12 lines if that makes a difference. Just debating a little about whether to run it with both filters (Oberg and can).

I ran an oberg filter that had the bypass plugged, it was a 60 micro screen. It was on a 451, anytime went the engine went above 6600 the pressure dropped from 75 to 60. I am sure it wouldn't have the pressure drop if the bypass wasn't plugged, but if it's bypassing oil then it now really a filter anymore. In fairness, that engine had some pretty loose clearances, so oil demand was a little high.

I wouldn't put a restriction on the suck side.
A clear view on the pressure side is how it should be.

I prefer the system one oil filters, they make housings to mount them wherever.

i have a system one filter that screws onto the oil pump like the factory filter.
how often should one check and clean those filters ?
this is my first time using one of those, so any guidance is appreciated.

So is the consensus that there should be no filtering between the pan and pump? Or is there a filter that will allow enough flow?

We have used the big (#10 and #12 AN) 100+ micron fuel stainless screen filters in the dual line swinging Milidon pickups with no oiling issues we saw years ago
You could also buy some 100 micron stainless screen and fasten it and wrap it around the bottom of the pickup to keep the big trash out of the lines and pump

I pull and clean mine whenever I change the oil. But the nice thing is if the oil pressure starts to act stupid, or you hear a noise, real easy to pull it off and look. I had a guy one time with a pulling truck engine, it was blowing up regularly at about every ten hooks. I told the guy it is pretty hard to diagnose root cause of a failure when rods are hanging out the block and pistons are in the oil pan. Pulling truck engines are spun really tight. So I had him install a system one filter and told him check the screen after every pull. 8th hook it had metal in it. Pulled it apart and the tri-metal main bearings were flaking material. Installed King bearings that are not tri-metal and the engine has held together for a couple years now.

i figured at every oil change, as i have done a filter change every time on everything for tons of years, going back to the late 60's.
good suggestion about the oil pressure fluctuation.
i would have probably thought of that sooner or later, but this engine that i have this filter for is a new combination, so i will probably err on the caution side, and pull the filter a few times to see if anything is out of the ordinary.

The System One oil filters I have seen apart have a lot more screen area for filtering than any of the Obergs I've seen or heard of

Iv’e never run an Oberg filter, but have been using System 1 Filters for the last 15 years & am more than happy with its performance. Excellent filtration, great for inspecting oil, easy to clean & reusable.

Could you run one of the system one “9 x “2 75 micron and not jeopardize choking off the oil supply?
