Need to buy a good distributor

I am having a 470 put together and need to get a good distributor. It has been many years since I purchased one and would like to ask what is out there now that is not junk? Thanks for your time!

Double agree....My Firecore one exploded when somthing came lose in it. Never seen an MSD do that.

Which block, B or R/B?
What application and ignition being used?
I like to use a stock looking aluminum Mopar factory with vacuum advance recurved by me, especially on street and strip cars to make most folks looking think It be stock, honest

do the msd's still have the "rusting" problem of a few years ago, where after a short time and the cap was pulled, there seemed to be a lot of rust build up on the internal parts ?

B Block. Street/Strip, need to buy a whole ignition.

I pull apart originals, clean them up, lube the centrifugal weights, add Mr. Gasket #925-B lightweight springs, and add the Hillman nylon collar since I usually destroy the stock ones taking them apart. I use them with an analog MSD 6AL and add a dial rev limiter and timing controller and the system has been flawless.

I've never had issues with the O.E. stuff. When I built the racecar it was getting a crank trigger. I was just looking foe something to spin the rotor to the cap. I bought a 440 source clearance part that had no electronics for $25. Billet aluminum, polished, ball bearing, brass cap terminals. Diameter isn't bad either. I did have to clearance the edge of the cap to fit against this intake. Been running it for 10 years with MSD 7AL2. Flawless.

I buy all the MSD older race boxes like the MSD404b,404C, MSD7, MSD7C and so on to use on my street and strip builds along with the proper Mallory or MSD race coils
I've had one MSD7 die on me while racing years ago on my old pump gas Duster

Thanks all for your experiences. It seems as though there are more options than I thought previously. Some of them are pretty trick! I wonder who makes the Summit brand? Also, does anyone here use Davis Unified Ignition (DUI)? The MSD unit is probably what I will buy, but I want to educate myself.

Pretty sure Summit distributors are Firecore. Haven't heard much good about those. I have a BB Chevy stroker that I built...the owner brought me a Summit distributor for it. It looks ok, but we'll see when I get it running. Good friend has a Summit distributor in his B1 motor, but it's just a gutted unit used w/ a crank trigger.

Those DUI distributors are ridiculously HUGE. I suggest looking into them closely before getting one. They may work ok, but holy crap are they huge and ugly. I'm surprised they fit under some hoods, lol.

Even w/ the rust "issues" people complain about w/ the MSD distributors, I've never had a problem from one of them.

Halifax Hops is on the mopar boards and he has a pile of cores. Can build one up with any curve you want and all fresh and tested. I needed one about a year ago and he set it up for me. Been perfect.

Same here. Mr. Gasket spring kit and use the mag pickup to trigger a 6AL, and I have a start/step retard for when the nitrous is activated.

If I ever go non-sequential EFI I'll weld the advance weights and continue to use it.

has anyone taken the chinesium "billet" distributors with the ball bearing shaft and replaced the guts with factory parts ?
maybe not worth considering.

The Firecore distributors have evolved to be a very reliable and impressive distributor. There have been a lot of updates and upgrades.

He's on A bodys only quite a bit.

I recently went with the Summit brand distributor. It has the std mopar magnetic trigger & is slightly smaller on the cap than the MSD which I found was a pain. It's probably not the flashiest distributor on the market but is user friendly. Someone mentioned they fall apart but as yet, mine has been great.

Any thoughts on Progression Ignition Distributors? Pricey, but lots of control and features.

I'd try one of those on a street car if I didn't have EFI. For a race car I'd stick with the MSD billet but for a street car I'd want vacuum advance. The PID setup looks good to me. Another option is the MSD ready to run distributors also but they still use an analog type curve using springs and weights. The PID setup is all digital.

For street use I'd want vacuum advance. So that sends you to either PID or the MSD ready to run. I think the PID setup might be better but I've never used it. You could call them and see what they say. It is an integrated system so you don't need an external box. Same with the ready to run from MSD.

I had been running a factory unit I recurved myself for over a decade. Worked great 👍, but I used JB weld to limit my mechanical advance stops (before I had a welder) and the jb weld started cracking a coming loose. So, I finally broke down ad bit he MSD Bullet. I'm happy with the MSD so far, but only been running it for a week tho. They've gone way up in price recently.. but with MSD's proven track record I figured it was worth the investment. The Pro billet distributor is definitely a quality piece.

You might want to consider an Australian made ICE distributor and even one of their ignition boxes. The quality of MSD equipment has done down hill, but the Aussie's still make great quality.

I bought an ICE system for a 500 Cadillac engine over 10-years ago and now only buy ICE when I need something new.
