I have never done that, but I know people who do.

Wasn't me driving, but my Duster suffered one of those on the launch when the substitute driver lifted while still in 1st due to tire spinnage.....Kabluwee......Nothing left of my floor boards, shifter, dash, and he broke his foot in three places.

Of all the millions of trips down the track fo 70 years with guys shifting into neutral at the finish I have NEVER heard of one doing that. Let off gas, click into neutral? Maybe I’m missing something here?

That author doesn't know that 727 and 904 don't have three drums in them like the GM and Ford 3 speed automatic have down
Drag race 727 will explode if you don't drive them correctly like already pointed out, if you lift on the throttle in low gear DO NOT go back the full throttle in low gear tsk
Shift it into 2nd or 3rd gear and drive it back to the pits so you can make another run later that day twocents scope

Two different designs. The 727 can over speed the 3rd/R drum in 1st by over loading the low roller. The TH400 can over speed the direct drum in 3rd by going into N at high rpm.

Been like that for years.

Saw a guy grenade a T350 behind a blown big block one day, without a shield or blanket. Rolled around on the track awhile in pain until medics arrived. Made an awful mess. Only way we knew what it used to be was this laying in the oil and shrapnel.

Back on topic, I've seen guys crash hard going to neutral, either the trans broke or they were shifting from high gear with a RMVB and didn't make it to neutral. I would not do it without a proper clean neutral VB and shifter.

TH350 trans usually break the roller clutch on the direct drum that splines to the 2nd gear clutch. And the part you show should have never been in a race transmission, it is replaced by a lug that locks the low roller to the case. I built a lot of TH350's for mud racers in jeeps, they held up real well until they started going over 600hp

I expect this thing was substantially more than that. It was pretty stout. The John Force burnout likely didn't help it.

The track people could only stand out there about 300' looking at the guy laying in the middle of the track. The local ambulance crew/medics had recently stopped coming to be on hand at the track. Seems the track operator got mad about the number of free hot dogs they were eating and cut them off. So they stopped showing up.

This was some years ago before everyone had a phone in their pocket or the phones would even work out in the sticks. I'll never forget, the track announcer gets on the PA and says "Attention in the concession stand. Dial 911"

Me and the guys I was with were like [Linked Image].

Easily top 3 cluster I've seen at the track.

Moral of the story. Put the right stuff in your car so no one has to see you roll around on the track, take you to the hospital and/or clean up the mess.

Never had or seen a 904 grenade (smaller diameter & lighter drum) and I've done 1-2 burnouts & clicked neutral past the finish for around 40 years. Have lost a couple 727's on the starting line like that in my early years
