Switching to Hoosiers

Switching to Hoosiers - 09/21/22 11:51 PM

I have ran Mickey Thompson tires on my race car for 30 years. The tire I have ran for the last 15 years plus, is their 3064, 29.50 x 11.50-15. They have "paused production" of this size and recommend their 3062W, a 29.50 x 10.50-15, but those are not available at this time either. The closest tire that I think will work for me is the Hoosier 18190D06 tire.
Has anyone else had to do this and what were your results?
MT's require tubes, Hoosiers not required, but can run them. What about air pressure differences? I've found that on my heavy car, that the MT's needed about 13.25 lb.'s of air. I would guess that would be a good place to start w/ Hoosiers?
Any real world insite will be appreciated.

Thanks, Brian

The D06 is a longer lasting tire...I prefer the D05 compound myself....But you will get good life out of them.

Using the D5 here since 1995 , I run 11 psi in my heavy car . No issues at all with Hoosiers . I do use tubes by preference . Gary

For what its worth its little cousin the 3062S we have been 1.09 60' on. Yes they have stopped production on a number of tires. The issue is two folks, a shortage of materials as well as the purchase by Goodyear. The material shortage is also affecting Hoosier as they have beenlimiting circle track guys most the year.

'69 3800lb@line RR, big street wedge motor, 720ftlbs, caltracs/mono's/9-ways, 10x29 Hoosier D06@17psi worked best for us, 1.42 60 best, 4.10 Dana low 1st gear in 727, 3rd season on them and 60's seem to be going away a tad, maybe cos sidewall has had some hammering, not sure yet.

I was forced to try them during the era that Phoenix were not being made. 18192. The actual tires in hand, were not even close to the spec sheet. Everyone loves them, and with a gear change, I suppose I might too. They were tiny compared to PH362 Phoenix. Almost comical.

I was wondering how long til Goodyear purchasing M/T would affect things. I've been racing big cars since 2003. I've always ran M/T. I did try 1 set of Goodyear (never again) and 1 set of Hoosier in that time. I run the 29.5x13.5 M/T with tubes. I wanted to try a taller tire so I went with the 31x14 Hoosier. I did lose a little in 60ft but that was to be expected with the taller tire. Overall I have no complaints with the tire. The Hoosiers were every bit as consistent as the M/T and got roughly the same amount of passes from them. I do run tubes and ran the same tube size in both tires. Also ran the same air pressure in both tires as well

I run tubes in my hoosiers by choice. In talking with Hoosier about it, they list their slicks as tubes not being required because it is safe to run their tire with no tube, however the tube is up to the buyer. I run them because it helps my sidewalls tremendously and I run the stiff sidewall version.

I ended up going ack to Goodyears after using M/T 14x32x15 stiff walls that work oaky usually, when they wore out I switch to a set of Hoosiers that the west coast warehouse told me to use and they wouldn't hook all the time so I swicth back to the Goodyears, no problem with them hooking anywhere up
I'll use Goodyears on the new car also wrench
