Heading to NMCA finals at Indy

Heading to NMCA finals at Indy - 09/21/22 09:44 PM

After breaking the motor last year my season has been less than stellar. Minor parts breakage and poor lights have plagued me. Ran GLSSA and the nostalgia event at Milan the past weekend. The back up converter seems much better. Made 21 passes. Friday night made seven 8.99-9.00 passes. Went to final 6 Saturday and last 8 Sunday. my lights came back. Driving the stripe came back. We’ll see what happens. Going to run 9.00 AA/FX index.

Wish we were there with you..For those that have seen the SM rod failure maybe this will look familiar and why we wont be there. BTW this rod had 6 pulls on the dyno and two passes on it from new.....Pin is still free on piston and rings still rotate..

Al, may I ask, Whos' rod, whos' piston..

Re: Heading to NMCA finals at Indy - 09/22/22 07:40 PM

Piston is CP, they are also new with the dyno passes and two runs. Rod will remain unnamed now as we are having the others xrayed and examined to determine what happened. New rods are on order from Carillo right now and they are rushing them but wont make this weekend. Already got new pins and more new pistons.

Re: Heading to NMCA finals at Indy - 09/23/22 01:11 AM

Weather is tough. D/A is the best I've run in,around 2000ft. 7-15 mph headwind. 60 ft is dead slow .05-.07 off from last weekend. Ran 9.11, 9.10. We are first out tommorow morning at 8:30am. D/A estimate is -200ft. Still with a 5mph headwind. However the wind switches to tailwind around noon. We have to declare index with-in 30 minutes of 1st qualifier. 9.00 or 9.25? All depends if 60ft is any good. At least the lights were decent .021R, .001 L. It will be a challenge.

I ran aluminum rods for years, hundreds of runs and no issues. Then a new set with 50 or so runs and mine looked like yours. That done me in steel rods only, and I really did not notice any performance difference by switching.

Haha.
Mineshaft or at the least very good air there all weekend.
DA right now at noon is 757 foot. That is mighty good air

Re: Heading to NMCA finals at Indy - 09/23/22 05:11 PM

Steel rods were a thought until Dart stopped making the blocks. So we will stick with aluminum as we cannot replace the block, if a steel rod breaks the block is DONE, this will just take a little clean up and be good. Between the two of us we have literally TENS of THOUSANDS of runs on aluminum rods and this is a first failure like this. The problem here is with the rod material, not throwing anyone under the bus just yet...

Re: Heading to NMCA finals at Indy - 09/24/22 01:59 AM

First off very thankful that the NMC racer that had a horrific crash at the stripe is going to recover. Most important part of the day. My racing. Air was good. Car was slow, 9.13. We ran this morning at 49 degrees. Track didn't hook. 1.40 60ft. Now if we want to change index we have 30 minutes. I've been 9.12, 9.10, 9.23. Not looking good. We decide to stick with the 9.0 index. So we add jet, soften the rear shock rebound and add tire pressure. The result 9.013@148.9. Now we're in the ballpark. Class eliminations start. Feeling pretty good at the tree since last weekend. Rd 1 .003 /9.008 lifting and tightening the stripe. Rd 2 slid in a little deep. Sat on the tree to be safe .042 /9.008 lifting again. Both runs would've been 9.00 flat out. Rd 3 rain. We'll complete in the AM.

Re: Heading to NMCA finals at Indy - 09/25/22 02:49 AM

Couple tough ones today. F/X rd 3. My friend Casey Fauss Johnson. Both AA/FX 9.0 index . My .027 to his .034. My 8.988 to his 8.989. I'm done. Manage to qualify for the Victory vs NMCA with a 9.006. 9.009 is #15 out of 16. First rd Tom Hoffman. He's a tough customer. I've had his number for a few years. Not today. We are both .009. His . 018 over to my .006 under. My lights have been good. Car is good. Stripe has been good. Tomorrow's another day.

That is two real tough foot brake, no throttle stop, 9.00 index races there.

Keep it up and those runs will turn to wins....

I'm sure the engine issue put you behind a little. They knew you were there. You sure were making some steam on the right hand time slip.

Any info on the fellow who went over the wall in the Cuda? Just saw the replay of that wreck. Brutal.

120 in the lights. Lost an engine. Just a reminder of what a "slow" car can do in a bad situation. Not even fast enough to require a full cage.

I talked to his friend whom I know that night. He had surgery on his left hand and arm, cracked pelvis, and may need surgery on his right arm/shoulder. I heard from other sources that it lost a freeze plug. That concurs with what I saw. Not much liquid scrubbing during clean-up. It looked like it lost water out of the left side of the engine in the video.

Sounds right. Smoke/steam and then it was on ice from there. Sounds like he was banged up, but having seen it, I'd say he was fortunate.

I don't know what for bar/cage he had in it, but it came down on the wall upside down and hit just above the drivers door first. Partially collapsed the roof looks like.

This one will be in the back of my mind when talking to guys about bars and cages in the future. 11 second car. Too slow to get hurt, right?

Here's the weekends runs. The runs marked in red at the top were lift/brake runs that were completed via Crew Chief Pro software.

Re: Heading to NMCA finals at Indy - 09/26/22 09:00 PM

I was there Saturday and Sunday running in the open bracket class. Had a 014 and 010 reaction time in the two time trials Saturday. Ran in the dial for dollars Saturday night dialed 6.55 and ran a 6.54 with a a three. Tried to hit the tree hard in the time trial Sunday and had a 018 red. Kept telling myself to take it easy on the tree in the first round of eliminations but went 014 red.
Still a great weekend the NMCA runs a great program. Saw some people i knew. I was running a fresh 904 behind my 440.

DVW I would like to have met you but didn't know where you were pitted. Keith
