Another MagnaLeak Bites the Dust

Another MagnaLeak Bites the Dust - 09/09/22 04:05 PM

Well, after my last fiasco with 500 leaking all over the place and nearly burning the car down, and now my 275 sprung a nice leak on our street strip car. I just pulled the 375 from the Duster to put in the Dart so we can go street racing tonight....None of the pumps are that old, but some of our cars also see street duty.....So, the pumps perform, but when that bearing goes out, be prepared for a big mess....And it does not seem like it takes that long for the bearings to go out...Its almost like you have to replace them every year or else...Suffer a big mess and loss of fuel.. ...

I would have put the rebuilt 500 in the car, but the big pump has bigger fittings and I would have to change all of them....The 375 has the same fittings as the 275....

My Aeromotive A1000....Almost 15 years, and still going.,...

I’ve had my Magnafuel 500 pump for 20 years, and I bought it used. It’s actually a MagnaFLOW pump before they changed names. Only have put in a shaft seal in all that time.

How much for your used pump???

when mine springs a leak its going in the trash. No rebuilding for me. I don't trust it after seeing all these leaking and bearing issues and mine is brand new last year. Runs super hot. Magnafuel says it runs 130* . sounds too hot to me.

My 275 needed bearings and seals after two years. I rebuilt and it leaked within a year, not very impressive pumps IMO. The pumps may be made here, but the motors come from china.

A friend had one, it began leaking two years after he got it. He switched to Aeromotive.

Not as familiar with their pumps as I am the BG400 pumps but are you guys sure you are changing out everything required to rebuild them right. The BG400 pump owners weren’t.

As I have said many times I have only had ONE leak over the last two decades. The one in the Savoy has been there for well over a decade now never an issue from it under the car getting pelted with crap on every burnout. These days we use Weldon stuff, just better products IMO but never had any real issues with Magnafuel pumps either. Have had some regulator problems over the years with them. That was what started the switch to Weldon was the regulators.

A guy gave me a 500 because it stopped working. Lower bearing had seized up. The kit is ordered. Where are they leaking at? With the amount of pressure they put I can see everything needs to be in good shape, even on my race car I don’t need 40 psi so I’ll cut it back to 15-20 which will lessen the wear and tear on seals and bearings. Im thinking a pressure rheostat type deal that would help on heat and battery drain. btw where are those bearings made? I hope not China.

“ I hope not China.”

You can pretty much bet on that shout

Generally you want the bypass pressure higher than 15-20, usually 25-29 seems to be the "sweet" spot. Make sure you use adequately sized bypass hose dont try to make it smaller than they suggest. You can get a USA made bearing if you choose. The seal is almost a universal one for those styles pumps used by many. Also better seals can be found out there at a good bearing supply house. Ive bought a few over the years that were "bad" from folks,

Most of the guys I see at the track have their return lines into the fuel cell plumbed wrong too. The fuel is supposed to dump below the fuel, not on top of it creating bubbles.

Well mine all dump to the top of the cell..They also all have tubes to the bottom smile Just because they dump up top don't mean they stay that way on the cell. We also use a bleed line at the regulatorif its a fast car just in case

the one I fixed for a buddy, I think failed because it was left to go dry. I think most fuel system issues are because they went dry.I will add though that Magnafuel documentation that I recall seeing said that they recommend changing the seal yearly.

Product Engineering and don't look back. They have an extra vane and they run cooler.
Mine was bought 2003. Never leaked.
