MP .590 Camshaft - 08/15/22 06:35 PM

I need to freshen my engine up this winter and I'm debating on installing the MP .590 cam I have. With my old motor (440, 10:1, 440 source heads) when I changed from the .557 to .590 camshaft the car picked up .1-.15 in the 1/4 mile if I remember correctly. Most of the pickup was from middle track on. Since most of my racing is 1/8th mile anymore I'm looking at trying to get more out of my car in the 1/8th. If I were to install the .590 cam (which was installed straight up) in my last motor would it be beneficial to advance it this time and if so how much?

My current engine is a different 440 with 10.9:1 with TF 240s (With the .557 cam installed straight up car usually is a 1.48 60ft, high 6.70s and 10.70s at 122mph)
Proform 850 carb
Victor 440 intake
8" coan 5000 stall convertor
727 footbraking
Dana 60 with 4.56
Car weights 3150 lbs with me.

I shift at 6,000 and try not to spin the motor over 6,500.

That cam likes to be advanced. I believe that mine is in at 105*(without going to look)

My mates 3150lb Dart, 440, 12.5:1, .MCH ported Eddies@320cfm, 590 cam in at 104, victor intake, 1050 Dom, 4.56/13x31's, 1.40 to 1.36 60's ran a best of 10.12@132, ultimate 5000 converter, said it liked being shifted@6300 and trapped@6800 in that combo which made an on track 599fwhp.

Everyone who has responded knows more than me but now that you have a "good" cylinder head, do 1/8 mile, and are still at 440 cubic inches, I think something with less duration would run quicker. I think AndyF commented in a thread about Trick Flow combos, even at 500 CI, not needing as much duration to produce good numbers as other types of combos. Look at how small the cam they offer is and I think they claim over 600 HP with it.

Even with that 'small' cam yo should be making 550HP. Before I'd swap cams risking wiping a lobe etc I'd find what's missing in it's current configuration. Either way you'd be inclined to fix what's wrong.

Mines in at 101. 451 (400 base) stage 6 heads and 13:1, 440-3 and a QF 1050 4500. I shift at 6800 and go through the lights at around 7500. It likes to be spun. It’s gone 9.82/135 in the quarter and 6.20 in the 1/8. It weighs 3150 at the line.
