69 Roadrunner Rim & Slick size?? - 05/03/22 02:42 PM

In the works on making my 69 Plymouth into a street strip car. I want to buy a set of rims and slicks just for the track, and for the street run the wheels and tires that are on it. I know there have been some posts on this before for street tires. But curious if some guys can comment on the set ups they have. It's an all stock body with Dana and super stock springs. Can I get a 15 x 10 with 5.0 back space rim on it? And if so, what size slick? Or stick with a 15x8 and roughly 28x10 slick?

Question for the OP.
Are the springs in the stock location, or did you move them inboard closer to the frame?

Original location.

I am no help on the rim selection, But we ran 10.50/29 on the rear of my Brothers 68 RR with stock spring location.
I can't remember if he had centered 10 inch wheels or if they were slightly offset.

I think the backspace on a 10" wide rim needs to be 5.5", according to guys here who've done that.
Belvedere body has less room than the Coronet & Charger because of the outer wheelhouse.
I've run a 295/50 R 15 on a '68 RR, on a 15x8 4.5" BS, plenty of room all around; I think the bulge was about 11.25".
Classic interference point on Mopar wheel openings - rear & front - is at the front bottom.
Also check the contours of the inner.
A straightedge, tape measure, and a spare wheel are handy for measuring, as side/side may differ.
A bit too much BS is easier to remedy with a spacer than if BS is not enough.
All the above is stock locations, openings & wheelhousings.

I do know a 9" rim with 4.5" back space with a 30x9' or a 29 x10" fits

If the car has had new 1/4 panels installed, then you need to measure carefully. Aftermarket 1/4s have thicker lips on the wheel openings that don't get trimmed down to factory width a lot of times. There is more room w/ factory 1/4 panels. twocents

8" wheel, 4.5 backspace with a 12" section width tire, 29.3 tall, is about it from my limited perspective.

69 gtx, stock width dana 60, SS springs, and newly replaced quarters/wheelhouses/AMD parts.
I would start somewhere in that ballpark on most cars.

On mine, 5.5 backspace would put the sidewall of the tire into the leaf spring, and 5" would be shaky/don't ever turn.
10" with 4.5 backspace would put the sidewall of the tire into the outer wheelhouse.

There is a skosh of extra space that could be utilized on the outside by using an
8.5 or 9" wheel instead of 8", but those width dimensions have both proved to be harder to find than 8".

68 Satellite .
rolled lip . Stock spring location . Factory XHD springs . Standard width diff .
8"rim use a 4 1/2 BS
10"rim use a 5 1/2"BS
I have run 295/65R15 @ 30.3/3"tall but slight rub on dogleg .
I shimmed spring back 1/4"to make it all fit with no rub .
I run a radial PBR 29.5x10.5R15 , actual height is 30"

Our '69RR, Dana, 8" wide torque thrusts 4.5" backspace, caltracs stock location10x29 Hoosier but the Dana was narrowed about 1", could get a 10.5 tyre on there at a push

Thanks for all the reply's! With the above post, it lends me to believe I'd be ok with 15x8. If everything is set up right they will hook.

Took some measurements off what's in there now. 15x8 with a 4.5 backspace. Tire is a 255/75 15. Quarter panels are factory panels. I have 1.50" from qrt panel lip to the tire, 1.50" from tire to leaf spring and 2.25" from rim to lead spring. By my figures before a 10" rim with 5.5 back space would fit, but figured a slick would rub the leaf spring. Just hate to go buy slicks and they dont fit. Tried that once back in the day.

An 8" wheel is better suited to a 9" slick than a 10", because the narrow wheel pulls in the sidewalls enough that the larger tire bows in the center. A 9" will give a better footprint and you can usually run a little more pressure that improves the high speed stability. At least, that's been my experience. YMMV

I would go along with that, the widest wheel you can, 9-10" on a 10" slick if poss. By the way we run 17psi on our Hoosiers, works well but still killing the tyre some (big torque motor), almost radial tyre pressures.

That's alot of pressure in a slick, does Hoosier require that? I v never ran Hoosier slicks before.

Re: 69 Roadrunner Rim & Slick size?? - 05/04/22 11:18 AM

That is not the norm for that size bias tyre but we don't do norm, I made that mistake in 1990 running 4psi on a 14x32 slick cos thats what everyone else ran, pushed it up to 6psi and it broke the Tach off the dash on the hit.....its what worked best for our 3800lb combo at Santa Pod, 1 more psi and it turned the tyre. My mate's 3150lb Dart 60'd best with 13psi on a 13x31 tyre, run as much as you can so you don't kill the tyre.

You would be surprised how much air you can run in a bias slick. We run 10.5w x31 run at 14psi. The10.5wx 28 run at 15 psi. The wider the rim the better. Look at any NHRA stocker. They are required to run 9x30. All use at least a 10' rim width.

This is what i'm looking to try next last year i ran my tire at 13 psi. and was surprised it hook shocked usually I'm at 12 psi.

I have 15x8" rims w/ 4.5" of BS and a 295-65 drag radial...very close to a 29.5x10.5 slick. I also have another pair of rims that are 15x8.5" w/ 5" of BS that have 29.5x10.5 slicks on them. Both sets fit the '69 RR w/ factory 1/4 panels, but neither will fit the '69 RR that had new 1/4s put on. They hit at the top outside edge and the front edge. The body shop that installed the 1/4 panels neglected to trim them back like the factory ones. Didn't notice it until after the paint work was all done. rant
A 28x10.5" or 275-60 fits great on it though.

Re: 69 Roadrunner Rim & Slick size?? - 05/04/22 02:35 PM

Apologies for going off topic. In my experience I've found that Caltracs will need more pressure in the tyre by design. A lot of the faster guys use a radial or a stiff sidewall, especially in a heavier car. Our Challenger would kill the sidewalls in a bias ply way before the "tread" was gone. A buddy tried some of our old slicks in his 10 second '55 Chevy, I did warn him, he made 2 passes and parked the car grin

Re: 69 Roadrunner Rim & Slick size?? - 05/04/22 03:17 PM

I never tried to fit "big" tires on my '69 RR, but all the fitment comments above seem to mirror what I've found w/ my '73 Chally (standard location springs and stock ride height).

8" w/ 4.5" backspace works with a tire up to about 11.5" sidewall; a typical 275/60 is about 11", and 29.5" x 9" slick is about the same, a 295/60(?) was 12" and too tight a fit w/o messing w/ the inner fender lips

10" w/ 5.5" backspace and 275/60 is also about 12" sidewall, but the shorter tire fits a little better... still modded the inner fender lips for a little more room at the top

Lots of good info! Thanks everyone, I'll stew on all of it, take some more measurements.
