We Have Ignition!! Stays lit, with Video!! - 02/14/22 01:02 PM

All,
Finally put fuel in - wanted to start the car and get transmission fluid in, make sure there's no leaks etc.....
Car fired right away - and died. Did the same thing a few more times, I knew it wasn't fuel.
Held the key in the start position brief extra second, engine will stay running.
MSD Digital 6AL is wired per MSD directions, original wiring is in car to the MSD.
I'm pretty sure this has been encountered before, it sounds familiar.
Any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Thanks All!

Wally.

The Chrysler factory ignition switch has two outputs. The brown wire is hot in crank only, not run. The blue wire is hot in run only, not crank. They must be tired together when running anything other than a stock ignition with the ballast resistor. Both wires are located at the ballast resistor. Tie them together to feed the small red ignition on wire at your MSD.

I knew it would be something fairly simple - even for an electrical imbecile like me!
I'll get to it sometime this week and report back.
Thank you very much!!

I just wanted to keep everything factory and not cut any wires so I just made a short Y connection wire that has a male terminal to go to switch plug and 2 females out of it with 1 going to ballast resister and 1 to MSD. It basically bypasses the resister and can be put back to stock in seconds.

The red wire is the MSD

You can solder the wire across the back of the ballast resistor terminals. It'll look dead stock.

I just use a piggy-back terminal for the adding to the ballast or voltage regulator.
Not exactly dead-stock, but you gotta really look to see it.

I make up a #14 male jumper wire and plug it in between the two stock plugs on the ballast resistor and either leave or remove the ballast resistor when I use MSD race ignitions scope

Just to be 100% correct, the blue wire that goes to the alternator and back to “N” in the bulkhead connector, correct?
BTW, I still have externally regulated alternator.

Thank you!

Thats correct. Regular will be unchanged..

Correct, with this set up using an MSD you would tie the wires from Q and N together to feed the MSD ignition (small red wire at the MSD box). Also the factory coil feed and distributor circuits from the factory ignition box must be taped off, or removed. There would be a cross feed with the brown wire from terminal Q in the bulkhead and the MSD coil wiring.

I went through the same challenges as the original poster about 20+ years ago on my car, when it was owned by my brother. Car would fire up in the crank position and immediately die. After messing around for about 10 minutes, I found the solution but, my brother didn't agree. We chased other stuff for probably over 2 hours, and I kept suggesting the above. He was frustrated and yelled at me saying that he didn't want to do the above as he thought something would burn up. I told him that it was a fused circuit, so; if it was wrong, the fuse would pop. He wouldn't listen.

Finally, he had to go in the house to use the bathroom, so; once he was out of sight, I twisted the wires together and fired the car within like 20 seconds. He walked back out shortly after to find what I'd done. Didn't gloat or anything but, pretty much said, I told you so.

my old man had a lot of "smarta$$ery" remarks, and another one he liked to say when you wacked yourself and were dancing around making up "new" words was : "I didn't feel a thing !" laugh2

That’s awesome! 😂
My dads favorite was “Don’t let your mouth overload your a$$”
I’m sure we could quote them every day.
