low deck pistons availability - 10/12/21 06:51 PM

I have a 400 getting stroked right now. Block was standard bore, but did not clean up at .030, so my brand new pistons will not work. 4.150 crank, 6.76 rods with .990 pins, looking for flat top or small dish in 040,050,055 now. Anyone carry this in forged shelf piston? Thanks for any direction

Can you go .033 over and be at 4.375?

Doesn't 440 Source keep .035/.040/.042 on the shelf?

How many cylinders didn't clean? Sleeve it? Icon had all manner of pistons listed, but just checking their online catalog and they seem to have deleted a bunch. Might just be a technical error on their website, IDK. S/F....Ken M

looks like you're setup is for the Mahle piston with 1.12 compression height. I don't think there are many pistons for that combo...
4.35 and 4.375 bore.

Ross used to make a piston for that in 4.390 bore.

A friend had a set of Ross pistons for a the same or similar combo. Not sure if he still has them.

Call Diamond and see what they have. They gave me a one dimensional change for free and it ended up being a modified shelf Chevy piston. Didn't cost anything.

I ran into same issue on my 400/470 build this year. My block was about .033 over after last hone. Couldn't find pistons easily. Ended up using a 2nd block which turned out to be cracked. Finally found a 3rd and that's so far so good but not out of the shop yet. Was supposed to be done and running in July. Just painful.

I had a Megablock 4.500 bore rehoned, scratches didn't disappear till 4.5043. I had my old CP pistons coated by Line2Line. Cost $300 but worked great. 550 inch with 440-1 heads made 926 hp using those coated pistons. They coat them within .0025 of actual bore size, then run the motor through a breakin procedure in several steps. I believe in L2L. Coatings. They say they can make up as much as .020 overbore if needed. Call them and discuss your situation.

I really wanted to do that but my shop was worried about it being consistent and not coming off being so thick. Good to hear. I may do that on my .033 over block at some point.

i only see the 1.12ch ross piston in a 4.375 bore in the catalog. I emailed them about some of the 383 pistons in the 1.307ch and to get smaller dish or a 4.29 bore would've made it a custom piston. about $1100.
The OP might be in the situation.

You had me hoping there at first till the last paragraph. Mine is 4.53 I can find quite a few used sets at 4.5. I’ve looked on most all sites and no one stocks .030 over for some reason.
