What oil do you use on a solid roller?

What oil do you use on a solid roller? - 09/05/21 06:15 PM

I've been doing some reading on this and I see some research that zinc in solid roller applications could do more harm than good due to carbon build up etc. What do you folks use? I've always used Rotella 15w40 with a bottle of Lucas engine oil break in additive and had good luck.

I use straight Rotella 15w40 and the T&D rockers (adjusted hot to Comp Cam's specs) rattle like hell at idle. Not that it worries me any, but I read that w30 would quiet it down some.

I spoke with Ray Barton the other day about his rocker system. He said not to run synthetic oil with roller cams on the street. Claims the bearings fail sooner if you do. We were talking about high lift cams on the street at the time, like .750+, i'm pretty sure thats what he was saying because i have run roller cams on the street with synthetic oils for years and never had an issue with .700" lift and a solid roller. Anyone else ever hear this?

I have primarily used Rotella.

This was posted by Jason Tabscott on facebook yesterday. He has averaged in the 9.0s on drag week and been 8.9X before with a NA small block. Could just be rumor but I believe he runs near 1" of lift.

Small Block on Drag Week means less than 430" so its not a giant engine.

I ran Mobil One 15w50 synthetic for several years in my hemi w/ no problems at all.
I switched to Valvoline VR1 20w50 conventional oil when the Mobil One got hard to find. Everything still looks great.
I've sent my lifters back to Isky twice for inspection and both time came back w/ a clean bill of health...needed nothing. I bought them new in 2006.

My wedge motor has Crane roller lifters in it and I ran it for about 4 years w/ Mobil One 15w50 synthetic. No problems from that one either.

Both street/strip combos.

Chip I ran the same Mobil 15w50 synthetic in my hemi. It was labeled as racing oil and did contain 1200p zinc.

Yep, good stuff. up Only reason I stopped using it was for a while, I couldn't find any on the shelf anywhere.
