Show me your trailer coupler lock !i - 08/15/21 05:06 PM

Gotta move my 24 foot Haulmark trailer(with that 27 roadster racer inside) from a locked, lighted and gated storage lot to now a parking space at my condo shop unit parking area. ..., what do you suggest for that 2 5/16 coupler ?

Here’s what appears to me to be the BESTest choice ... ur thoughts ?

I was hoping someone would post a good suggestion.

In the meantime, remove all the wheels, jack the nose up as high as you can using your electric jack if so equipped and disconnect the wire inside the jack motor.

If you leave the jack motor functional it can be hot wired. With it fully extended its hard to tow away with out the back dragging.

It doesn’t take too long to install 4 wheels and steal the trailer but it takes time to lower that jack.

And if possible, chain the tongue to something solid, immovable and substantial with a very hard lock. Don't recall the brand (sorry, no picture either) but I had a coupler lock that had the key slot/tumblers on the bottom so if somebody tried to bust it, it was one more uncomfortable/time-consuming/working up position for them...

Saw the threads off a ball and get a pin lock for the latch is an option. Back it in so they can’t get your car out and take wheels off.

Someone had shared this video in response to the same question recently. Looks like the same lock you pictured in the original post.

I use this exact one also. I’m sure thry could cut it off but it shoukld cost them some time and make some noise, which might deter them.

I bought this from Walmart and loop it thru the the trailer tires. Definetely would slow them down

Inside battery. Cable thru the wheel connected to a hidden secondary dead mans pull switch. As soon as a wheel turns it pulls the cable and applies the brakes.

Nothing is better than making something yourself as they practice on commercial stuff to be ready for it. Some guys go as far as putting gps on their trailer that notifies you on your phone when the trailer is moved. Think outside the box.

Problem is almost all these thieves these days bring cordless cut-off tools or cordless sawzalls.
Takes all of 1 minute to cut thru.
These locks are only good to keep the honest people honest.

EXCELLENT point S .... thx to the others .. even cHeEzY!

What’s happening is the Sarasota airport is expanding BIG TIME since Southwest Airlines moved in and they need this parking area back from the people who leased the WHOLE LOT.

My workshop is on a dead-end road BUT EVEN STILL it doesn’t offer me the secure feeling that I’d like to have.

Park a vehicle in front of it. Problem solved.

That gps idea ? .. is there a way that can be defeated? Like putting something over the trailer to prevent the signal?

Yes it can. For less than $100 on Ebay you can buy a GPS jammer.

The Master Lock hack is nothing new. But again locks are not hard to defeat most the time. I use a similar hitch lock and padlock on the lock. I also have two very large Dobermans and cameras all over. Will this stop a determined thief likely not but they will think twice with 240lbs of Doberman to overcome

One of our mid west members removes all four tires. It serves two purposes as the tires are out of the sun and it makes it a lot harder to steal.

Thx cHeEzY... that was mentioned before... but it reminds me of a bud up in Michigan. He did that but because DOING THAT pizzed off the potential thief .. they stole a couple of drums.

But .... here’s an idea. Put cable locks on each pair on each side then BUILD plywood UV tire protectors WITH wood underneath... that would have to be removed to get at the cables.

OBVIOUSLY.... to justify this .. the trailer would have to be not regularly moved eek

To add ..... found this lock in a box o junk ...... it took a touch of grinding on the coupler lip with my Hobo Fright 8$ piece ... up

ANYONE try this type of tire lock ?

Master Lock 377 trailer lock! Wow, so easy to pick, a crook could do it!

With the battery operated tools available today, a hand held angle grinder with a metal cut-off wheel cuts things off quick and easy.
I like the ideas posted to make the trailer harder to tow away.
