Question with a new project

Question with a new project - 07/17/21 02:29 AM

I’m adding a cowl scoop. The scoop has a point on the front. Some are saying to remove the point. I guess I could cut it off and tiger hair a blunt nose on it. What do you guys think, cut it off or leave it?

I think I would like it better as a smooth transition vs what it is now. It's not terrible as-is, but it's not as clean as it could be basically...

I suppose I could pick up a can of tiger hair and get busy. It would match the hood line better if it were straight across the front.

More work, but you could also just shave off the whole hoodscoop perimeter around the bottom to eliminate the front lip instead? You'd loose some overall height though so that may not work for what you have going on.

Or taper the cut along the sides & front so the front is more flush but the rear is at full height.
I agree that a smooth transition would look better, but ideal to my eye would be to loose the "point" at the front.
Must be a pretty mellow evening here, usually a few guys will post how much they hate "Chevy hoods"...
I personally have no issue with cowl-induction hoods, and I like the more gradual/rounded shapes I see on some of the SO cars.

I would prefer no lip if it was my car but either way looks good. Let me know when you are done and I will send you mine to do lol.

Do you have a hood latch up front? I have a glasstek race weight hood on my 68 Barracuda. Its pinned down in 6 places, the front center pin is on the core support. I can see the hood bending up in front of the front center pin, like a lot. I have lowered it down where it rests well below the header panel but it still comes up. It bends enough in front of the pin that I can't believe it hasn't broken yet.

What do YOU think when you walk by it? If YOU don't care, why mess with it? However, if there is the slightest dislike for the 'point' remove it now. Every time YOU walk by the car you don't want to be telling yourself 'Boy, I wish I'd removed that.'.

I have a latch, it is a hinged hood.

Why does it have to be a cowl scoop? Looks too much like a GM product. I'd opt for one that gets the air from the front.

A smooth transition will look better

Re: Question with a new project - 07/17/21 02:48 PM

The hood scoop is a bolt on type and has an inner lip, so i have to be careful how much i take off the bottom or i will remove the mounting flange. I may just remove the center most point and blend the rest in the best i can. That shouldn't be too hard to do. Its not hard to cut as i have removed about 4" from the rear already. I will cut the hole tomorrow and see what i can do with that point on the front. Thanks

I like the mopar scoops, but i think they are a big parachute on your hood, especially the Hemi scoop. With a T ram, i think these work better with what i'm doing.

Also, gonna cut the hole tomorrow, do you think a jigsaw with a fine blade works best?

I always mask the area & then draw on the profile I need. Fine jigsaw blade will be fine, cut from the good side of the hood.

What about a formica blade ? Made to not chip the hard facing .

Bad340 - sounds like too much air through the grille.
It hits the radiator & support and dams up.
Try blocking the upper grilles off, either in front or behind.

Extend the front of the scoop all the way to the front edge of the hood with a taper.

I used a jigsaw with a tile blade to cut straight lines and a metal blade for the arch. Worked real nice. Cleaned up the edges with a DA and a small drum sander.

Yes, it is latched and pinned.

Re: Question with a new project - 07/28/21 12:25 PM

Thanks guys. I pretty happy with the outcome. I rattle can sprayed with SEM black trim paint. This hood will only be on it for about 4 years. Once the Hemi is in, it will get a different hood, so everything will be back under the hood at that point.
Maybe this hood.
