Best electric brake controller for a race trailer? - 07/01/21 05:54 PM

Hi, I'm looking for advise on a new electric brake controller. In my '93 D350 that I usually tow with, I have an ancient tekonsha. It seems I am always fiddling with the knob and either they are too loose or too tight. On a recent trip with Jerico Jeff, he pointed out that I was skidding the tires a lot and I wore one thru and it blew. I'm too deaf to hear it skidding. So I think I need one of the newer, intelligent controllers. My 2017 ram work truck has one built in from the factory, and it seems to always apply just the right amount of braking. Something like that for the old truck would be great.
Does anyone have any experience with one that works smooth like that?

Thanks, Joel

I agree that the built in controllers in trucks these days are superior. They have a load of data they can use like brake pressure vehicle position and all the other info a modern ECU has.

A friend of mine who does extensive research on everything he buys just got a Redarc tow pro elite for his 03 Ram 3500. He just made a trip to Colorado with it and said it worked awesome.

The new tekonosha ones are good. They have g meters and sense when you are stopping hard to increase voltage gradually.

Way better than the old school ones that just grab.

I use a Wifi electric brake controller that I operate off my phone. 5 preset settings, 100% adjustable. Its called Elecbrakes out of Australia. You can swap between vehicals, no extra wiring involved.

Let me tell you about my Prodigy 2. I had my Prodigy 2 for about 10 years and the adjustment for the brake bias broke. No issue, I more then got my money out of it. So I bought a Prodigy 3 and installed it. Now the Prodigy 2 worked great and I wanted to fix it, so I called Tekonsha and talked to their repair department, they asked why I am fixing it and I told them. They informed me that it had a lifetime guarantee, I told them I didn’t have any proof that I bought it, had it 10 years and it was in 3 different trucks. They told me “no problem”. I sent it in and about 12 days later a new one showed up in the mail. That controller has been riding around in my trailers for the last 13 years waiting for the Prodigy 3 to fail.

I like the Prodigy 3 better, it has some features that makes troubleshooting brake issues a little easier.

Also i use the controller for 3 different trailers from a 53ft 18,000 lb to my little 16ft tractor hauler. It works great for all of them.
