Hemi crank and rods in 440 block?????

First I did not build it, but there is one for sale.

I have basic understanding of what they did. But not sure why, is this a viable mix of parts? I'm thinking not really even though it may function?

So : 8 bolt hemi crank with bushing for 4spd. Hemi rods, hyperutectic pistons
dont know the deck height.

Hemi rods are .100 longer. And smaller pins, heavy rotating assembly, same stroke .030 over bore on a 440 block.

Why and Huh?

It will work but it is heavy. No good reason to put a Hemi rotating assembly in a 440 block unless that is just what a person had laying around. If it was an original street Hemi rotating assembly the guy could've sold it for some decent change.

Back in the day it was done quite often, longer rod (would push those 440 pistons out of the deck) SMALLER pin (some would remove the bushing and run the 1.09 pin) stronger crank. 440 piston is a lot lighter than a Hemi. Hemi stuff Wasn’t made of gold back then. And one didn’t have 8 different rods and cranks to chose from back then either. Not as dumb as you think

Why not? Slightly heavier rod but lighter piston would work ok. You could get some compression out of some low squeeze slugs. Not a bad idea at all if you are low on funds. As long as it was balanced right it would work fine. Loads of hemis running around with 440 cranks. Todd

440 standard rod is 6.760”, street Hemi is 6.860”, 396 NASCAR Hemi is 6.960”, and there are 7.06, and others.
440 wrist pin is 1.09”, race Hemi is 1.03”.

Thanks all, i am going to look at it and get a better idea if it seems to be a quality assembly. feel and look closely at the cylinder walls and how smooth the rotation feels.

was built quite a few years ago and has just been bagged up.

If it was me I wouldn't buy it, put that money towards a better motor
Hemi crank and rods are a lot heavier than the stock 440 parts, heavier parts rev slower than lighter parts and they don't slow down as fast as the lighter parts when you let off the throttle
440 blocks have thinner main webbing than the hemi blocks do and they crack easier with heavier rotating parts when revved up
Buy a 400 block after having it sonic tested and build a good stroker motor
