Gen 2 Hemi Intakes - 04/22/21 04:47 AM

Planning a 4.5" bore 528ci or 540ci Hemi build with the Edelbrock Vic Jr Heads. I'll be shooting for a 725-750hp by 6500-6600rpm on pump gas.

Trying to decide on an intake.

The Edelbrock dual carb unit (350-7524) they designed for these heads my be the obvious choice, but I wanted to ask the Gen 2 Hemi guys if there were other options that would match up well in terms of port design etc to the new Edelbrock hemi heads.

Is the Edelbrock the only intake these heads deserve, or are there other GOOD single or dual carb options?

For dual carb, Weiand Tunnelram!

I would be interested to see how this one stacks up, for the HP your wanting, it may be the best of both worlds.

The Vanke modded Indy DP is what I run on my 540. I ran it and the Indy SP back to back on the engine dyno during break-in. The DP lost 11hp at 6,800 compared to the SP, but picked up over 30lbs of torque down low. That was on MP/Eddy heads ported by MCH.

I asked Russ at the Indy booth for a recommendation on which intake for my combo. When he strongly recommended the Vanke DP, I was very skeptical based on my experience with wedges. I thought maybe he just needed rid of excess DPs. So I bought both the single and the dual planes. I also had a Barton, but since it wasn't going to fit under my Shaker, I didn't bother spending the dyno time to try it. We expected the DP to win down low, but were very surprised at how well it hung with the SP up top. I suspect that a little time with a grinder would have brought it right up to the SP.

With the ThumperDart modified 1050, the big Hemi drives like a wedge. Good street manners and very responsive.

The Stage V is worth a look. And it lets you run Holleys. But it takes a different air cleaner. It think the guy in Canada can make one. But you didn't say what kind of car it goes on. That's where the Edelbrock is king. It's supposed to work even with a shaker or fresh air hood.

And forget that single carb idea. You know that wouldn't look right.

572ci, same heads, I did get one strong recommendation for the edelbrock single plane 2x4, and one
strong recommendation for the Barton single plane 4500.

I have the 4150 Mopar/Barton on hand and plan to mod it to 4500 with some milling, then make up the lost volume
with phenolic spacer. Engine was fired with Indy 4150 single plane, but hasn't been installed in the car yet.
Also have Weiand tunnel ram to try later which should be fun.

If a deal comes along on the edelbrock, I'll grab one of those too.

I have the Indy big runner six bolt single plane under my Shaker hood, just barley, and it sounds like the Vanke is a good option with a little porting. Did anyone get or install the oil shield with it? Got pics?

A single Dominator looks just fine under the Shaker. Outta sight, outta mind. grin

I have a 4.5 x 4.5 572 Hemi with Eddy Vic Jr heads on it that I'v tried a lot of induction setups on. Single 950 on Indy intake and 6 pack Mod Man both ran low 10's. Stage V with 2 OOTB 800 Eddy AVS carbs ran 9.85 and has the most torque and the best driveability but you do need the FHO air cleaner base. Eddy intake is a compromise for stock hood clearence , I think the Stage V is a better intake due to larger plenum and carbs spaced over ports more evenly but it also liked 1" spacers
1200 Dominator made good power on the dyne but the 4000 lb car didn't like it

I don't think any of the mentioned intakes will have a problem making 725+ hp on a 528-540" engine...considering everything else is up to par.
If I was going for a low profile intake for dual carbs...I'd use the Stage V.

I prefer a big single Dominator setup.

I have a baby hemi so no impute but I run a stage V but have a marine manifold too. It has the vankle modifications & same spacing as Stage V so you can use holley carbs.

3 pictures of Stage V and the last is the marine dual plane.

being gen 2 stoopid, what is the difference between the marine dual plane and the passenger car dual plane ?
operational RPM's ? torque curve ? height ? all and more ?

The manifold is the same height. The carbs are farther apart to use holleys. I think the main reason for KB design. The plenum is opened up vankle modification for better distribution and it will allow bigger carbs. More HP was the goal too. here is a factory picture 750cfm carb throttle plates are too big to go through holes on factory piece.

Look at them side by side and they are easy to tell apart.

The Stage V is a little taller but still will work with my shaker. As you can see the shaker sits up higher through the hood.

From what I read Chrysler stopped the intake and left KB holding the bag.

I went with the Edelbrock intake in the FI version simply because I wanted it to fit under the shaker hood. Was able to get everything to fit, even with the Indy heads with the slightly raised intake ports. Getting the fuel rails, throttle linkage, sensors, and fuel pressure regulator out of sight for that more stock appearing look was a chore but in the end it just runs so nice with the FI.

Looking at Indy's website/catalog it shows nothing about a Hemi DP intake.....is this something thats no longer made?

Moparrob68 is the air cleaner used on in this pic the one from FHO?

Thanks.

I run a stage V with two 800 AVS2 Edelbrocks on my 572 - one thing that really helped is a 1" super sucker spacer under teach carb - really evened out the cylinders
