A-body offset leaf spring kit

A-body offset leaf spring kit - 04/19/21 02:01 PM

With the Duster I am building, I will stay with 10.5" wide rear tire for class purposes. In a thread in a facebook group about rear tire size, this guy explained he has a 10" wide wheel with 5.5" backspacing with a 28"x12" tire on his Duster by using an offset shackel/hanger kit. Even though I already have the UScartool spring relocation kit, if all I need is the offset kit to get the 10.5" tire in there, then that's what I'll do

With all of that said, what's the max offset these kits come in? I see Doc Diff has 1/2" offset but is that the most offset you can get? Mancini only lists B and E body kits as far as I can tell

Where are you guys getting these kits? I don't see them in Summit or Jegs. Maybe I don't know how to find them

Thanks

If you have the off set shackle and you want more start with more offset on the wheels but measure first

I just need to offset shackles for now. This is not my first Duster and even playing with the backspacing, trying to get the most tire I can put under there, I have had a 10" tire scrape the springs

Screw the offset shackle deal, move the springs into the rear subframes up scope
Way more clearances for bigger tires later up work
As far as wheel offset with the stock a Body 8 3/4 housing and brakes 1/2 negative spacing works well thumbs
Meaning having a 1/2 inch more space. offset distant, on the backside like 4.5 on the backside on a 8 inch wide wheel or having 5 1/2 inch on a 10 inch wide wheel works great up
Don't forget that the front wheel well lip may need massaging to get more tire to front lip clearances hammer up grin Mine did shruggy
I had my last street Duster rear wheel wells stretch 5 inches, 2 inches towards the rear and 3 inches to the front and I moved the rear end housing forward one inch for more traction devil up scope

What I noticed on my '72 Duster was that the 3/4" rear offset shackles helped with the rear spring section, but not at the front.
Obvious if you think about it, but I didn't do that work.
Needed front mount to be inboard, but I'm not sure what's available there.
275/60R15s on 8.5" rims (4.5" BS) were still tight at the front section.
Oddly, my '74 with 8" factory Rallyes & 275s cleared the springs fine at both sections with a .250" spacer. Never rubbed. Moved spring eye back .250".
My '70 is like Cab's deal; springs moved to the rails & mini-tubbed & stretched a bit (just cut), so a 13x31 slick fits fine on a 15x12 rim.

Thanks for that. My first thought was to do just that - spring relocation, tubs, narrow rear end, stretch wheel opening. I’m trying not to get into stretching the wheel openings if I don’t have to bc I’m staying in “small tire” matches. Also, I have a B body 8 3/4 housing I’m using to make a custom length if I need to

There’s a front and back part to the offset kit. I have heard of guys just doing the back but that doesn’t make sense to me

All you need is the correct offset shackle and front hanger kit, no reason to chop up the car, imop. Plenty of room, my uncle has this exact setup on his duster. Runs a 275 pro m/t at the track and a 275 on a 15x10 on the street.

I run Dr. Diff's offset kit on my Duster and a MT 28x10.50 slick is not an issue nor is a 275/65 MT Drag Radial on a 10" rim. I am pretty sure my offset is 3.75" on both sets of wheels. I run a Weld Wheel with the slicks and a Torque Thrust on the radials. I'm not sure if the later model Dusters have a little more space in the wheel well from the early years, as mine is a '75. I did have to shim the hanger to center the tire in the wheel well (front to back).

I appreciate the information and so it looks like the previous information I was given about the 10" wide rim was accurate. I appreciate your help

Re: A-body offset leaf spring kit - 04/22/21 04:41 PM

i used a piece of 3/8" thick aluminum for a shim on my buddy's 72 duster to center the tire and wheel in the openings. this was with the factory quarters, which were in perfect condition, as the car came from arazona.
