First outing with the new carbs

First outing with the new carbs - 04/18/21 02:08 AM

Didnt have enough tuning parts for the carb. Haven't worked with Holley stuff in years. But at the end got it close on the leave. Once the leave was close the shocks were too loose. Now at fulll tight it carries about 55ft out. Have some suspension settling to do. Haven't attacked the top end yet.
Doug.

You ever try to take that wheelie out of it dvw? My car was carrying the fronts to the 60 ft timers and sometimes beyond. Was full stiff on the extension up front. I had the shocks revalved and got to test it yesterday. With last years setup and carrying the fronts it was 1.23 started tightening the fronts and taking the wheelie out of it and with it just barely daylighting the fronts it went 1.211. I know not as much fun but just saying.

The shocks are Afco doubles. Had the fronts revalved tighter last year. Rears are Big Gun. After the big wheelie the fronts are now full tight. It then proceeded to repeat the 1.25's. It still carried to high about 55ft out. The carbs still need more work. I didn't have any more parts. Mark is sending me a care package of carb tuning stuff Monday. Also took a battery out of the rear before yesterday. So the rear lost 38lbs. So it's about 55.5-56% on the nose. It's never had travel limiters, or needed them. But maybe now it will. Or even tighter valving. Also have the option of dropping the ladder bars one more hole. That may help. Maybe some nose ballast. Hope not just took 17 lbs off with the new hood. The intake plenum is very large and the car is foot brake. we'll see if we can'y improve it.

First outing you did well with some of the initial issues. No doubt it'll go faster/quicker. Maybe try the 4" collectors now? LMK

Looking great Doug, serious lift there even with full tight on the ext.

Can you tweak the IC to keep it down a tad more?

How do the new carbs feel on the hit compared the your Eddys ?

Re: First outing with the new carbs - 04/19/21 04:52 PM

Sean bring the collectors Thursday. Yes the instant center can come down. The rear height can come down also. So there are options. I want to test one more time with all the pump cams and squirters matched up. You can definitely see the blue cams on the secondary’s are slower to come in. The squirters were a guess and the only parts available. That way I have a good base on two different days. Mike had the track prepped really well. Let’s see what happens on a more normal day. Towards the end of the day when it was getting pretty good results I tightened the rebound on the rear shocks 2 clicks for run 9. And another 2 clicks on run 10. So at -14, -12, -10 it ran 1.253 all 3 times.

I may need some 4" straight to add length. I do have slip-on turn-downs. I'll be doing some welding this week so, let me know if straight will work etc. YES Thursday is still a 'go' but I'm telling everyone to keep it on the DL.

I'm wondering if the bars aren't unloading the tire a little after seeing the vids and pics? Taking a few #'s of the card.

See I can do it. Well I cheated. My wife helped me. It was all fine until the fuel started spilling out of the vents and it bogged.

Its Ohio and I get bored easily. Some of the major stuff(cage, paint and body) will have to wait til we tear it completely apart but may as well make sure mechanicals are good and change some other stuff smile

Re: First outing with the new carbs - 04/21/21 08:19 PM

One of the old Mopar drag race seminar chassis engineers made a comment about wheelie height, his thoughts were as long as the front 'tars" where off the ground by a little any further movement up was wasted energy and motion shruggy
I stiffen up the front shock travel on my S/P car, it went from 1.27/1.28 60 ft. times to 1.24 with it stiffen up with no other changes up scope
I use to help a friend who raced 1971 Demon 340 car in NHRA stock, he was red lightening a lot by pulling big (2 to 3 ft. high) wheelies at Pomona and going red with .489 to .495 red lights. I convince him to take the 90/10 shocks off the front end and put a set of standard 50/50 Monroe shocks on the car at the races, the next run he cut a .512 light and the car picked up about .009 in the 60 ft. times with about three inch wheelies.
He didn't like the smaller wheelies and put the 90/10 back on for the first round of class on Friday afternoon, he red lighted puke He was the fastest car in his class also so he got to race on Sunday and red lighted again in the second round.
My message is change the car for better results, not the driver tsk

Re: First outing with the new carbs - 04/21/21 10:22 PM

The big wheelie pass was .25 second and 3.5 mph slower than the rest of the day.
