I'm back!

I'm back! - 02/16/21 01:31 PM

Hi All!
I've been a member of the current board since 2003 or something like that. A tonne of posts over the years, but pretty much stopped about 10 years ago, or there abouts. I pop in every year or so to see how everyone is doing and whats happening, but it kinda got depressing. My interest in the car got diverted by fishing and then surfing.... but in recent months my 16 year old daughter has started expressing interest in the car, and the wife-boss has been saying that if I'm not doing anything with it, then I need to get rid of it..... and that ain't happening! So, I have a re-invigorated interest in the car.

Car is a '67 Belvedere with a 505" spec'd out by Dan from Performance Only, about 15 years ago:
Engine is a E-headed (stage 1? port by Dan), 10.4:1 505", 0.587/0.593 287/294 cam, M1 intake and 1050 Dominator (8896). Dominator has been converted from 3 to 2- circuit with QuickFuel metering plates. It was an impressive engine 15 years ago...seems much less so now.
Callies Crank, Oliver Rods, Diamond Pistons.

Plan for this weekend is to spend some quality time with the daughter trying to tune it, again. My guess is that we'll really need to be looking at a carb rebuild kit.... but we can spend some time with it first. Got to find excuses these days.

Long story short, expect some really SIMPLE questions from me over the coming weeks/months. It's been so long since I've given it any real attention that I've pretty much forgotten everything that I used to know (or think I knew).
I look forward to chatting some more about getting this back on the street (or strip) where it belongs!

Cheers!

Tune it down and put her in the seat! You’ll have a ball! My daughter enjoyed going to the races with me.... Just had no interest in the “car thing”....

If I can get her helping for even 5 min, I'd be thrilled!

Make sure and use new fresh fuel, if there is any old fuel in the tank at all drain it and throw it away twocents
I would pull both fuel bowls and see if there is any gunk or corrosion inside them and clean as needed, if none is in it their run it up twocents
How much experience does she have driving now?
Are you wanting her to race it?
Neither one of my kids wanted to drive my drag cars when they were younger and living at home, my middle grandson would drive any of my cars now in a hot second including my S/P car shruggy Maybe someday luck

She certainly doesn't yet have the driving experience to get behind this one.

She's always shown an interest in the car, lately telling me I should give it to her. It's now the time to get her hands dirty, and maybe, just maybe spend some time together.

If she wants to drive it make her earn that up twocents
Also make sure that she has the needed training and skills to do that, I have disconnected the rear barrels on several drag cars for kids and new owners to learn how to get some seat time without scaring them bad enough to not want to go faster than 12.0 in the 1/4 mile to start with work
Is there room for her to do a ride along at the track to show her what your car will do? If so do that and make sure the car doesn't go faster than the track allows it to go with a passenger, if not start her off in something slower twocents

She's not much, but I certainly used to love her....

Most interesting part about the car was me running it down the track with those wheels on it!

Glad you are getting it back out!

Hey Jeremiah!
Yeah, that was a good few years ago. I reckon 16-17 years. Does not seem that long ago.

Came upon our first hurdle for our proposed 'tuning' day - damn balancer no longer has any timing marks on it! Just rust.

It's a Powerbond that Dan from Performance Only suggested I use, lack of use and care clearly led to it being nothing much more than rust. For some bizarre reason that I can't recollect, the engine was assembled with a Precision Performance balancer, that I still have. I just can't remember why I changed it over? I just can't remember if there was an issue with the Precision Performance balancer, or if I simply forgot to give the Powerbond to the crew that assembled the engine for me, and they supplied (at my cost) the precision balancer,

I really don't think I've turned a screw to tune the engine in about 10 years, and it probably hasn't even been on the street in over 5 years.

I turn it over occasionally, and if it sits for too long, I pull the distributor and prime with a priming rod, so really need to double check the timing (although it did fire up last weekend OK). I mark the distributor and rotor, so it should be reasonably close.
I just remember that when I did install the Powerbond balancer, I managed to mess up the key. So, somewhat hesitant to do it again.

Anyway, this weekend might be more of a degrease the engine and clean it all up, as opposed to doing some tuning. Passenger side valve cover gasket is leaking like a sieve anyway, so we can at least replace those this weekend.

Welcome back! This place has slowed down quite a bit. At least, anything posted will hang there for a long time before it gets buried.
