440 Source billet oil pump and swingng pickup

440 Source billet oil pump and swingng pickup - 01/30/21 01:59 AM

For people who have never seen in person or up close the 440 source external oil pump and swinging pick up, I thought it would be good for people to see. I searched a couple of forums for any information on this pump and pickup and could only find 2 reviews. One neutral and another that said they worked ok. I'm not a fan of the bright blue anodizing, but both pieces look to be well made.
They were $250 cheaper than the Milodon pieces I normally use. I am building a Stage V hemi conversion head motor, 498CI with the newer Edelborck proflo 4. I will beat up on this combo and see how it holds up

They are pretty much a copy of the Indy Cylinder Head pieces at a significant discount.

That swinging pickup looks a lot like a dual line Milidon pickup work whistling scope

A few years back, I got to see a major rod failure explosion on a 440 Source stroker kit build, part of the owners build included a Source swinging pickup like the one in the pic. The pickup had taken a heavy hit from the rod beating on it so it was going to be trashed. I asked if we could cut the swinging section in half so we could see how big the passage was. Well it wasn't big at all, in fact it was rather small. The owners kid had some graph paper & the little genius plotted out the internal cavity cross sectional area & it basicly converted to just less than a 7/16 diameter. So having 2x -8 lines sucking from this pickup was pretty much a waste of time as it was sucking from a source less than 1x -8 hose. Every since I've just used a single static pickup with a -12 hose, I figured that was more likely to be able to pass oil than the cheap Source unit. I like oil in my engines at rpm & kinda thought the lack of oil may have been a contributing factor to the failure, a broken rod.

Pick up looks very similar to mine. Been feeding out of it with one #12 hose for 8 years 700 passes @7000+. Never hurt a bearing.

It "looks like" the Indy unit ... more likely it was made by the same folks making the Indy units. I don't know this for a fact but I would imagine a lot of Indy's billet stuff is outsourced - just like their castings. Certain companies have certain strengths and expertise. If you try to do it all, something will suffer.

I also have one of those pumps but not the pickup. I'm using a Milodon road race pan with the integral pickup. 440 Source was blowing those out the door a couple years ago at a huge discount and I just couldn't resist. Haven't installed it yet.

Mine is for a remote filter so I won't have any worries about that gasket failure.

Interesting. If the cast cavity had a cross section of just one AN-12 line, I would be happy. But not 7/16" dia (hydraulic).
Any chance you can get those dimensions?
For 7/16, I am thinking the height would have to be less than 3/16"

To calculate a rectangle with radiused corners you need the corner radius.
What I remember, where "r" is the corner radius:
A = H × W - (П × r^2)
Example:
If H = 2.00", W = 4.00", r = .125"
A = 7.95"

Be very sure to inspect the O-ring on the pickup, an air leak there is fatal.

440Jim was figuring the EQUIVALENT diameter to the area of the rectangle. He plugged in the Area of the rectangle (H x W) into the area of a circle and solved for D. Making the assumption you want the two to be the same. That gets you the diameter to make the same area. You are correct, technically the radii on the corners take away some area on the rectangle though.

Which O-ring are you referring to? At the face seals to the pan, or is there an internal one? I have the 440 Source pickup in my motor and had an odd bearing failure. Trying to rule out all possible causes so this thread has me thinking a bit.

Of course, what was I thinking, they never leak

You had better check the cotter keys that hold the pickup together. I have seen it happen twice where that came apart in the engine. Fun times.

I've never seen an o-ring on the pickup. You want the pickup to move freely. An o-ring would just make it bind. Furthermore, the pickup is supposed to be submerged.

Mine seems to swivel pretty freely. I don't think there's an O-ring in there, but I'll take a closer look. Thanks!

You got me there. Less than 1% error...
When your done calculating all the irregularities in this casting passage, Pull your head out, and get to work in the shop.
I was asking to see if the flow area was closer to 7/16 dia or 12/16=3/4. Not 0.6%

Has anyone done a similar test to the milodon unit?
The one I have doesn’t seem to be internally very large either.

The inside of the 440 source swinging pick-up is extremely rough - the casting is no where near the quality of the milodon - if you are going to use it spend some time cleaning the inside of the pick-up to improve the flow. I have had two of them and they work good after you clean them up - but I would not use one as cast. The oil pump cover is a pretty good piece just bulky and still has the two piece construction but with o-rings- no green gasket of death. We switched to the new milodon one piece covers and pumps pricey but worth the peace of mind. I don't believe the Milodon swinging pick-up design ever had an O-ring and it does have stops built in to limit the sweep - you want it to move freely in the pan.

Properly machined and tolerance that pick up won't need an O-ring or other seal at the pivot. The oil itself will seal the gap.

Old thread I know - but can anyone confirm if these pumps are still available as shown in the OP's pics?

Cant see anything on 440 Source's website.

Anyone know for sure ?

Thanx....

I bought mine on "clearance" maybe 5 years ago. Mine is for a remote filter. I suspect anything on clearance means that's the end of them.

I have a hard time understanding the point of dual lines when the oil is still flowing through stock size passages in the pump, filter and block !!

Supposedly I bought one of the last ones a few months back. They said no more.

Is it made in the US or Communist China?
