vac pump users question

vac pump users question - 12/01/20 01:43 AM

I run a Moroso enhanced vac pump with a 10" regulator & generally it works great. But, when i cross the line & pull the chute, the breather seems to turn into a vape user & we get a heavy burst of fumes coming from the breather element. When we check the overflow back in the pit, I usually get an egg cup worth of oil out of it which i dont consider excessive, but we get a coating of oil around everything close to the breather. Anyway the track official has seen it & is asking questions. So what do you think is causing my problem? I pull from the front of the rocker covers & we have screens to deflect any large slashes of oil at the exit point, my regulator is connected to the pump so its not pulling large air volumes thru the engine, the catch can/overflow is a Stefs unit so its got baffles in it & its a deep unit so plenty of room to disperse any oil vapour Why does it fume so bad?

What I did to stop a similar issue, I just had a mist of oil on the inner fender well sometimes. I took off the breather and pushed in some coarse steel wool, for extra baffling and cut a strip of the mat used for oil spills and zip tied it around the filter. Change the matt about every ten runs. On my to do list is to fab a better breather tank this winter.

I mounted my suction side fitting to the pump on top of the front of passenger side valve cover with the bypass valve beside it with the instructions I receive from GZ motor sports on my unit right next to suction side fitting. I added a long thin full width baffle with 1/4 inch holes in it under both fittings so it can suck oil off of the rocker arms and pushrods.
On your deal I would add a baffle and move the pressure relief valve to the motor as close as i could get it to the vacuum hose twocents
I had similar issues with mine at first until I added the baffle, it was blowing oil out of the breather cap after two runs, not anymore boogie

My regulator is mounted on the inner fender. It pulls from the upper front corner of the valve cover. No baffle. Stainless scrubbers in the resivoir. The top of and old sock on the breather to absorb drips. 20-25 passes pulls about 4 oz. of oil. GZ 101 pump.

What cyl heads?? Sounds like you have a lot of oil up top. Consider a better baffle in front of your pick up. I have an .080 sheet of alum that is within .100 of the valve cover as a baffle in front of my pick up. It just sounds like your overwhelming your pick up with oil under decel.

The heads are Indy -1's & the block is an Indymaxx so yeah, there's not a great big hole for the oil to drain back. But I am running a dry sump & one scavenge point is in the valley at the back where oil accumulates under hard acceleration. The vac pump is pulling from the front of the covers & the baffles are well protecting the exit point. The relief is one that mounts to the pump so its not that easy to mount on the engine, but I don't really see that as a cure. I've just added the Moroso oil seperator to try at the next outing. I had it so I just made a small hose & plumbed it in.

What puke tank are you using and how is it plumbed? Is it shared with the dry sump tanks puke tank? FWIW on my car I pull 19" of vaccuum and see noting but water. The dragster pulls 14" when sealed up and also pulls nothing but water. Both are pulled off of one valvecover. Be more intersted in your puke tank and plumbing at this point since you say it is not full but blowing everywhere.

Are the baffles metal plate or screen as previously mentioned? If screen I don't think that would do anything to stop oil from getting pulled in.

Kinda hard to see as all my hoses are black, but yes it does share with the drysump tank & it just feeds via the fitting that comes with the Stefs system. I never get water, ever, only oil.
