E-Body Oil Pan

E-Body Oil Pan - 11/28/20 11:55 PM

]What would you guys recommend for a deep oil pan for a 70 E-body with stock steering? I have been running the 440-source aluminum 8-quart pan but it is way too tight with the miloden external pickup fittings. The 440-source pan would be OK if it didn't have the angle on the passenger side for the extra quart. [/size]

I'v use one of those Charlie's fab pan with dual fittings with the hole for a drag link with stock front suspension fitted like a glove up
Now that i think about i never use this setup with motor mounts work i use an engine plate.

I have a 440 stroked to 500-Indy 440-1 heads with a Miloden oil pump. I can only use the front feed line to the pump because the stock K-frame motor-mount perch blocks the rear pump inlet. I have the 440-source 8-qt aluminum pan setup with a swivel pickup and with the 12-AN oil line fittings along with the pan kickout on the passenger side, it barely fits when pulling and installing engine in stock Kframe Barracuda.

My best was a 9.89 at 135MPH...1.42-1.45 60ft avg.

I'll take a look at the pans suggested.

I have the same 440 source pan on my cuda w/ all stock front suspension. I use the Milodon oil pump w/ the front ext. pickup port, a stock factory oil pump cover (b/c I hate the remote filter mounts), and a single static pickup in the pan. It all fits great and I can leave it all hooked up when R&Ring the motor.

Thanks for the feedback and photos. Mine fits but it is a PIA to get by the rounded edge at the front of the kframe. I R&R motor and 727 trany at the same time.
440 source no longer carry's that oil pan. Anyone got a NOS one they want to sell...I would be interested.

I know I'm in the minority, if not completely alone, in this opinion, but I'd ditch the external line unless your crank hits the pickup. I used to spin my flat tappet 472 up to 7200 with the 3/8 pickup and modified passage and never starved for oil. I tried the external pickup, but after fitment issues and realizing your swap one 90* in the block for another 90* in the external line, it went on the shelf. I never once lost oil pressure, cavitated, suspected oiling issues in the YEARS it was like that running 10.30s-10.60s. I see guys struggle with those kits and always wonder why.

I used a stock 1970/1971 6 quart street hemi and 440 6 pack 6 quart oil pan with the stock 3/8 inch 440 pickup in my 511 and later 517 C.I. pump gas stroker motor in my 1971 Duster street and strip car. I put hundreds of runs on that motor and 3000 + miles on it with one oiling issue when I let the oil level get down close the add mark, the oil pressure would drop down after about 3 seconds after letting off at the end of the 1/4 mile running 10.00s at 134.+ MPH, adding oil to the full line fixed and prevented that after seeing it the first time up No bearing damage either boogie
I had to trim the idler arm side of the rear lip on the K member to clear the oil pan after moving the motor back right at one inch from the stock location devil

Glad I'm not the only one. I still advise to use the half inch pickup because it's a minimal change with an obvious benefit, but I wasn't able to due to how they clearanced the block. Didn't leave enough shoulder on the pickup port area to overdrill and rental.

The next time the motor is out, trim that stock K-frame opening. Even a little helps. Cutting and welding the opening bigger is the next level.

Thanks for the kframe idea. I did notch it some to get my engine in...not that much.

Is your engine still in the stock location? I just can't figure out how you have any clearance issues w/ that pan?

Re: E-Body Oil Pan - 12/07/20 11:41 PM

I guess that my issue is I R&R the engine and 727 tranny all together. WHY? Because i have a flex-plate shield bolted at the trany to engine. This shield catches the stock 1970 Ebody firewall and makes it difficult to get by the rounded edge of the front of the Kframe...because of the oilpan kickout on the passenger side.

So I want to try a different oil pan. I could tunnel the Barracuda...but don't want to chop it up...yet. I could use a turbo 350 with a certified case...but want to stay Mopar. Wish there was certified case for my 727 so I wouldn't need the flex plate shield and a blanket.

Thanks for the feedback...

Re: E-Body Oil Pan - 12/08/20 01:13 PM

Why not get a CSR carbon shield? That will take the place of your current shield and blanket. Those flexplate shields are always a PITA. I don't think any reasonably deep oil pan is gonna make your problem any easier. I'd either trim the K frame or get the CSR shield. twocents

A powerglide (wish I had one) or TH400 I understand, but a TH350?
