Real Chrome looking bumper basecoat/ Clearcoat Paint - 10/22/20 02:02 PM

I know this topic has been posted before but I heard there's been new products that have developed out there to simulate real chrome.
Anyone know what the newest and best product out there?
I saw Eastwood hassomething out now but not sure of the results.

This is definitely something that depends on the person doing it. THE most critical part to getting a good chrome finish is the clear coat. IF you follow the instructions you are applying the chrome to a polished black surface. This is where its tricky. IF that first coat of clear does not dry fast...it wants to "float" the chrome off the black. There is literally no adhesion because you are putting it over a smooth, shiny surface. This is when people get a fuzzy or grey appearance instead of a clean chrome look. Alsa does make a 1K clear that works great for the first coat to lock it down. Just use any regular clear after that.
It is a tricky process and each time i do it, they come out a little better...LOL

Can you post some pics? Curious of the final appearance. There was a place local to me that could “chrome” Anything.
They had a piece of paper chromed in the office. The owner went to the pokie for something and i have no idea where stuff like this can be done now.
I did a fiberglass cuda bumper with chrome tape that looked great from 20 ft away.

Poked around this stuff a couple times. Have seen the product at SEMA and a shop in Vegas. If you can find someone in your area that does it I think it would be your best bet.

There is a place in Haysville, KS called Alternative Chrome Creations.

He does the spray chrome stuff and it is AMAZING!

Last he told me, though, is he won't do bumpers anymore. Said they turn yellow over time IIRC?

For things like interior plastics it works really well.

Is that because of excessive UV exposure vs. the interior?

I believe so.

I have used it. The surface must be perfect. The chrome goes over black and then a clear goes on top.

Were you happy with the end result?

Absolutely satisfied. The stuff is expensive but you will be happy with the end result. I repeat, the surface must be absolutely perfect.

Did you spray black 1st before the chrome?
The bumper will be perfect. Will sand down and then follow their directions.

Yes, the black is what makes the chrome really pop. Just follow their instructions exactly and you will love the result.

Would anyone know who has the closest color silver to chrome.
This whole chrome deal is getting too complicated.
Want to buy the paint tomorrow and spray away.

Something that is closer to chrome than Viper Silver.

This page has a review of chrome paints:

https://www.thedrive.com/reviews/28733/best-chrome-spray-paints

They only mention a "mirror chrome finish" in this products description:

My bumper is fake chrome. It does look metallic in the sun, just wished it was a bit brighter. fake chrome & fake grill.

I did reply to you about how to paint the chrome and the process.....

If you looking for a silver that mimics chrome....i cant say of any that i know of. There are silver basecoats that look good. but its your personal choice of what you think chrome looks like ? Go to a paint store and look through some books for newer cars and look at the silvers??

Ford UX try that paint code

I appreciate that. Thanks.
I was leaning towards the Alsa easy chrome but really don't want to do both bumpers so, I'm going to take your advice and look at paint swatches tomorrow and pick one thats as closer to chrome as possible. Thankyou for the reply and am going to look at Ford UX 1st.

[quote=n20mstr]Ford W7 looks good too Winnie?????????

After going through about 200 swatches.
It ended up as splitting hairs.
Most of these bright silver metallic colors are very similar. So I went with your advice Ford UX.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks.
Did all the fiberglass work yesterday, had a few cracks which I refiberglasses, sanded and today, I applied 4 coats of 2 part epoxy primer and sanded with 500 grit wet sandpaper.
Smooth as glass.
Was going to apply basecoat/ clearcoat today but this old guy is worn out. Tomorrow it will be done.

Can you spray a dry tack coat before coming back with the first full coat to prevent the problem?

yes you can do that However using the Alsa speed clear, made specifically for this works best.. Two things that make or break your chrome paint.....Black shiny base, and that first coat of clear

I would have went with the Alsa easy chrome but there's no margin for error and no do overs with 6oz. for $145.00

Looks like a pearl white. Maybe it’s just the lighting.
