DRIVING IT TO THE TRACK

DRIVING IT TO THE TRACK - 10/02/20 12:16 AM

Anyone have a reasonable combo for a drive to the track, race and drive back? Was at the track on Sunday talking to and getting beat by factory cars running high 10's low 11's. I'd prefer to keep it as old school as possible Thanks

We do exactly that with a 505" RB, a mild .545 hydraulic roller cam, 2800 (rated) 11" stall and 3.54 rear gear. Low, low 11's n/a with an intake that fits under a flat hood. Low 10's with a shot of spray.

It feels like a regular 440 with a small cam until you hit the loud pedal!

The bigger the engine the easier it is to build something that you can drive easily yet still run in the 10's. A pump gas 540 with 3.54 gears can drive pretty nice yet run hard at the track. Especially if you are smart about taking some weight out in the right spots.

I can give you my old pump gas combination that ran a bunch of 10.00 in my Duster that weighed 3450 lb. with me in it with the air cleaner on through the 3.0 inch exhaust with Magnaflow 7x14 inch oval muffs with 3.0 inch inlet on the sides with center exit mounted at the rear bumper.
It was a 1976 400 block stroke to 4.300 with a 4.375 bore, 6.800 long CAT BB Chevy type rods, Ross dished pistons that had 10.78 to 1 compression with Indy SR max wedge heads with 76.00 CC chambers. That combination had a Indy 400-3 intake with several different Holley 1050 CFM Dominator carbs. on it that I tested. The best power it made that way was 727 HP on Oregon 92 octane non ethanol pump swill devil
I had the motor moved back right at one inch based on the trans cross member using a set of elephant ears on the front with a stock type trans mount elongated on the rear to allow me to slide it, the motor and trans, back one inch wrenchdevil
That car had ladder bars with coil overs for the rear suspension with a set of double adjustable Strange 15 inch extended coil overs, narrowed Dana 60 with a spool,35 spline axles and 4.10 stock Dana gears.
Stock 1971 Duster front suspension with six cylinder torsion bars and a set of Koni SPA1 front shocks.
That car would hook up in a mud puddle during a rainstorm boogie whistling AKA aside it worked real well on M/T ET street bias ply tires on the street as well good on M/T ET Street Drag Radials on a good track, 1.42 best 60 Ft ,I think work CRS disease whiney
The ET Street Radials didn't work good at all on the street or on a marginal track down whiney shruggy
I put around 3500 miles on that car on the street and hundreds of passes on it at different tracks before trading it off towards my current S/P car, it was a lot of fun and exceeded all of my expectations up boogie
IHTHs luck

512", Indy EZ1s & intake w/850DP, 3000 stall 727 & 3.55s with 28" tire, '72 Duster w/'glass hood, pump 93 = 11.30s through full exhaust.
Don't recall the cam specs off the top of my head, but it wasn't a big stick.
Nothing trick, just SS springs, 3/8" fuel line, mech pump, big alum radiator.

Big motor, reasonable gear, 6000 RPM limit, 3000-3500 weight is a decent recipe.

My A body( all steel) runs that on pump gas with a bone stock 360 bottom end through the muffs, and i weigh over 300 driving it..lol
Shift it at 6100, ( around 10 to 1 compression, maybe)

Big blocks..lol

You could always cheat a little.... Nice light A-body with a modern power plant! No emissions stuff needed and probably almost 1000lbs lighter.

Source cnc heads same 440 bottom end , 5000vert , 28" radial slick , 10.88 best
Both pump gas , drive 40 miles to track , fit rear tyres , empty boot , fit airplate/screen

Just take a look at dragweek combos.... Moparbilly’s ride was a great example of a 10 sec street driver

Re: DRIVING IT TO THE TRACK - 10/02/20 12:23 PM

Well I guess not many if at all are going to build something like we have but here it is>

589ci wedge, 10:1cr, 572-13 365cnc heads, 1.55 jesels, small Herbert s/roller, .625/.625..260-270@.050, indy 440-2, small 950HP, spray bar oiling, 2.1/8>2.1/4" TTI's, 4.10 Dana, 10x29's@16psi, 4200 stall with a low 1st gear 727 in a 3800@line '69RR., mono's/caltracs/9-ways/90-10's, run on V-power pump.

Drive to track, Race, drive home all with full exhausts to rear, mechanical water pump, + drive to shows, car has been 10.35@128, been 130+...1.43 60's best.....no issues at all...relying on the big torque to get it moving, HP nothing to write about, shift@5800, trap@6200>6300. Next year will see it with a Thumper 1050 Dominator and possibly run with open hdrs?......hoping for high 10.1's>2's. up

Re: DRIVING IT TO THE TRACK - 10/02/20 01:04 PM

I've driven my Dart to the track a bunch, it gets driven to work and out for ice cream on cruise nights. It's a pump 93 434" small block, Indy heads, solid roller, 727, the converter flashes 5600 and 4.10 gears. The car never gets hot, doesn't foul plugs and unlike me isn't cantankerous at all. It runs mid 6.20's at 110 in the 1/8 at 3350#.

Great recommendation to look at the combos these folks use.

You can drive to the track even if it is two hundred miles!

At 3350 we'd be along side you in the traps smile...personally I'd prefer what you have but not in a B-bod.

Re: DRIVING IT TO THE TRACK - 10/02/20 03:20 PM

Other than the debate between a SS/BB, my thoughts are getting the duration, stall and rear gear to work to make it quick and also manageable for the ride to and from. What should I be looking for?

Re: DRIVING IT TO THE TRACK - 10/02/20 03:24 PM

I drive my 67 Barracuda to the track often, race, then drive home. Only once did that bite me in the butt...5 years ago, third round of a race it kicked a rod out the side just before the finish line. Had to call the wife to come get me, grab the truck and trailer, scoop up my pile and take it home.

That said, I have also won quite a few races on days when I drove it in. Here is the combo:

67 Barracuda, 3250 lbs
408 stroker, ported Edelbrocks, Hughes solid FT cam (264/268 @ 0.05), Howards EMD lifters
Victor intake, 13:1 compression, home build 750dp e85 carb (running e85 obviously),
727, 8" PTC converter, Caltracs (mono's, links, shocks), MO875 with spool and 4.10 gears, Hoosier 275/60/r15 drag radials
All this through 3" Dynomax race bullets.

Car runs 1.38 60', 6.44@105.9mph, 10.19@130.5mph.

Running on e85 means I can drive it anytime during the summer and not worry about it getting too hot....heck, most races I never use my fan, lol.

I drive my Charger everywhere, 10k miles on the drivetrain, with one engine freshen up after a flat cam issue at 5k miles, the track is about 140 miles round trip depending on road closures, it now has a 4.10 gear but have not made it to the track yet, but with a 3.54 gear has been 11.04 @ 123, 1700ft DA, 4100lb , cold AC, overdrive trans, full exhaust to the bumper, 512 lowdeck,9.7to1,, small hydro roller cam, 440 source Heads, I hope to crack the 10's with the 4.10 gear.

Our old 528 combo did real well running a best of 10.006 @ 137 @ 3850lb. about 15 years ago. It was a 4.50 bore 4.15 stroke combo. Good heads (572-13) and 440-3x and a 1250 (ish) Pro Systems Dom. Solid Roller, Lift was around .720" IIRC. 4:10 gears. Drove it all over, work, shows and just for fun. Originally it ran 10.7's, It was really scienced out by the end, the converter / cam choice was the biggest gains followed by the manifold and carb. HTH's up

Re: DRIVING IT TO THE TRACK - 10/02/20 06:33 PM

Best 11.02 @ 123, But it usually runs 11-teens or low 20s through the mufflers on DOT tires.
451 low deck built by me/machined and balanced professionally, 10.75:1, rpm heads, PRH solid roller .631/.262/266, victor/1000 or 950 carbs
2" super comps, homemade exhaust, 727 with 9.5" converter, 4.10 Dana.

The 451 engine was a giant step up from the former 484 cam, stock piston smog 440 that ran pushed the car to 12s for what seemed like forever.

I haven't raced it since last May 5th and didn't really prepare the car other than taking everything out of the trunk.
I forgot to drop tire pressure and had 20lbs cold in the quick time pros at the time, which in retrospect was stupid of me, but whatever.
I just wanted to drive the darn thing and concentrate on doing that.
It went 7.15, 7.16, 7.17, 7.17 and then loaded up and drove home.

I don't own a trailer but have been looking at them for awhile, and might go that way at some point.

Re: DRIVING IT TO THE TRACK - 10/02/20 09:57 PM

I have driven my 9 sec Cuda to the track......I don't do it often, as I am not into changing tires at the track, but I have done it. When I have, its on a DOT cheater tire and runs 9.80's. Been wanting to do drag week with it for years. I have my doubts the big Hemi would hold up. I think a G3 Hemi would be a much better option and hold up to the abuse a lot better....

to the track once so far.. it ran 10.17 at 131mph with a 1.32 60'.. it has more in it.. its Holley injected
and the day I ran it it was 2820 lbs(full tank with me) it has a 518 trans with 4.10 gears but at the
track I dont use OD.. its a fun street rod

My D50 is a small block, 394ci, 10.9 comp. ,Indy 360-2 Brett Miller heads. PTC 8 in. Converter, 3.50 rear gears, MT drag Radials, mufflers. Drive to track let it cool off and run 6.20"s @110 in the 1/8. Needs a looser converter, only foot brakes to 2900 rpm. Crossing the finish line in 2nd gear.
