426 Hemi Weiand tunnel ram tops

426 Hemi Weiand tunnel ram tops - 09/10/20 10:48 PM

I don't expect this would get a ton of hits, but was wondering if anyone would remember anything about these.

They probably made more than I have been able to find esp. if we include 4500 stuff and Mag, but I wanted to limit this to the more common 4150 aluminum ones out there.

First-1911 casting, quite a bit deeper under the carbs than usual (this is the one I have, mine is not polished).
Second-Another 1911 casting, much shorter
Third- 1991 casting which is somewhat different but looks similar to the shorter 1911.
Fourth- 1991D casting, which I have never seen before. "D" for "deep, maybe?

work

Anyone got any old catalogs, or can you remember anything about all this....

Any particular one considered "the good one" or newer/better?

I had three different tops at one time, four if you count the last Dominator top. I have one remaining the number is 7164 and is on a Hemi Blower intake, very short under two inches and a slight ram to it.. I also had 1911 two normal holley four barrel spacing.1912 or 1913 is for the Doms. Can not remember the other numbers that I had but it was for Normal Holleys. The dom top is ramped also and might be this way so the first carb does not block the air flow of the second carb. Under the carb the plenums are much bigger in each application do to the height of each top.

Rich, I have the same one on my 605 and am very happy with it. I was told that a couple spacers might have given me a bit more hp but I never tested any. I didn't have room under the hood for any additional height. I machined the top to match the Thermoquads. I believe once you try yours and get the carbs dialed in nobody will ever be able to pry it out of your hands. Mine is very street friendly and makes insane torque from idle to redline.

Runner length on these Tunnel Rams is pretty close to a cross ram around 8 inches long. When I have talked to a lot of builders of after market tunnel rams and this is their words is that the placement of the carbs does not matter to the intake. This is the bath tube style big plenum intakes on a lot of big hemis running in NSS. I have to take their word on this never have owned a cross ram Super Stock intake but other I know have run spread type and near inline type with near same times on the track.

Judging by the pics, it appears as though the one with big tall plenum would be used on a different bottom piece than the others.

I’m not sure if it helps the discussion or makes it more confusing,
But....Here is the bottom side of 1991D

Vs

The bottom side of the first 1911 (the style Dave and I have)

I am probably missing something, but I can't help but wonder if there are any interchangeability
problems between all these/anything that would prevent them from being swapped as Dwayne mentions.

And thanks for the vote Dave, it’s definitely on the list of things to test👍

Looked back to the 1979 DC Cat. and the Tunnel Ram P3690233 and the top P3690234. This top is not as short as my top on the blower intake manifold. The manifold base states it is a Weiand magnesium Tunnel Ram.under all this it states I.R. mounting plates for use without plenum allows direct mounting of Carburation. and the part number P3571054.

Thanks. My oldest DC catalog is 1989 so that is helpful.

Still collecting info on these wherever I can find it. Not sure what interchanges, but might buy the big plenum version if I find one.

Re: 426 Hemi Weiand tunnel ram tops - 09/14/20 06:50 PM

I sold my NOS Weiand Tunnel Ram with both Dom top and reg four barrel top about two month ago. Went to a member on this board that is building a Pro Stock Cuda or I should say restoring a Pro Stock Cuda. I figured I would never run it on my Challenger like in the old days of racing and have a choice of many other Hemi Intakes already that I can run the Shaker or the TA hood with. We are planning on running 65 68 Super Stock Carbs on the tunnel ram in the Cuda to start and then switch over to period correct Doms in the future. I might be gong over to work on the Cuda tonight and if I do will take pictures of what I sold him and the top on my blower manifold.

Re: 426 Hemi Weiand tunnel ram tops - 09/15/20 05:24 PM

The short top number 7164 is off the hemi blower inake I have and it is quite a bit shorter both in height and length than the tunnel ram tops.. So maybe only certain tops will fit certain bases.

Thanks. The Supercharger top definitely has a different fastener arrangement than the others.

It would be interesting to see a comparison between the Weiand and Indy tunnel rams .I would suspect the Weiand would make quite a bit more torque.

Re: 426 Hemi Weiand tunnel ram tops - 09/16/20 03:57 PM

Do not know much about Indy Tunnel Rams. I do know that the Weiand Tunnel Ram that was on my Challenger way back in the early 70s has a little different base than the one in the pictures I posted, but had the Dom top and Dom Carbs. It never failed in the RPM range with a 430 CI Hemi that was shifted at 9000 rpm and through the traps at 10000 rpm. Never had access to a Dyno back in those days there were just not around. The Tunnel Ram I sold and that is in the picture above, we are going to try the Super Stock 65 68 Carbs on it with the normal Holley spread. They seem to be a fantastic carb and run fantastic on a after market cross ram in the other car and the runners lengths are exactly the same. Next year is when we will find out if they work. Might save us buying a set of Doms if these carbs work on the Cuda. With N Pro Stock there are no rules to the carburation. We have a single four Indy Intake on the wall so maybe that can be tried at the end of next year.
