Header gaskets

Header gaskets - 08/17/20 05:22 PM

What are you guys using? I currently have some copper gaskets but they leak. I have Hooker Fenderwell headers and 452 heads. With the Stealth Super Sniper install I want to get the exhaust leaks fixed prior to firing this thing up

I"ve had good luck with Jegs brand copper gaskets on my 360 and use Mr. Gasket ultra seal gaskets on my 440.

I ordered Remflex and Cometics for the head side and Remflex for the collector side.

How thick are the header flanges? Especially with long fenderwell headers

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 12:16 AM

A thin smear of copper rtv on your copper gaskets and you should be good. Wire brush it off and apply new rtv if you need to take it apart.

Those copper gaskets don't crush at all from my experience. The ones I tried were hard as hell so they are either touching or not touching and not touching is leaking.

This is what I'm experiencing too, I figured they'd be a softer copper to allow for them to crush.

Pretty thick, they are 20 year old Hooker Super Comps I'd say 3/8" without going and measuring them

FelPro has been good for me with aluminum heads.

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 12:02 PM

Never had any luck w/ the copper or aluminum header gaskets.
Just high temp silicone works good if you can easily apply it and pull the header straight onto the mating surface. On most big block stock body cars, you can't really do that.
The tan colored Indy gaskets work real well, but they're for the big port heads.
I've had good luck w/ the Fel-Pro gaskets and I have a set of Remflex gaskets on the way. Figured I'd give them a try since I've heard good things about them.

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 12:32 PM

I agree with just a (thin smear) of silicone if we're talking a manifold or header with a machined flat flange.

I think Hooker has a ground down but -raised- weld bead at each port so not sure if that's flat enough or enough surface area.

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 01:06 PM

I think the issue many times is not the gasket, but the header flange. I personally have had the best luck with the aluminum layer type gasket for sealing and reuse. Hi-temp RTV works if you don't mind it squishing out and looking bad.
But headers with a raised welded ridge on the flange are just junk. I have built the last few sets on my projects, I weld in stubs, and then put them in a mill and flatten them just like an OEM exhaust manifold, then build and attach the tubes. I have had no leaks with any type of gasket.

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 01:15 PM

If the flange is machined flat just a thin smear of rtv works. So thin it's not squishing out everywhere. I prefer Toyota black FIPG.

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 02:45 PM

no matter the header brand or gasket used, separate the end tubes from the center tubes [a hacksaw works] and drill one hole on each tube mating flange oversize.
this allows for flexing due to heat, and ensures no leaks.
this even works to seal cheapo brands with thin flanges.
i stole this trick from mr. Pbody years ago. biggrin

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 02:55 PM

If your mating surfaces are fairly flat a coat of Red Hi Temp RTV only will do the trick. If the flanges are warped the Remflex is hard to beat.

Either way Remflex are hard to beat but Red RTV is cheap and works well in most situations.

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 06:40 PM

Regardless of any gasket manufacturer or material, the final matter is how the mating surfaces are from the header flange to the gasket. I've seen more poorly designed header flanges that will not allow any gasket to seal, and the RTV eventually will blow through.

Mate the gasket to the header flange and determine if there are passages -- even very slight gaps, such a 1/64" or progressively larger -- for exhaust leakage. Raised ridge/beads are the most concern (example: Hookers). If needed, apply a wide-spread amount of JB-Weld Extreme-Temp putty around header flange, allow one-day to dry, then flat file the surface to be flush... in other words, a wider flange surface that will mate with the gasket. That' what I've done and had excellent success.

Re: Header gaskets - 08/18/20 10:48 PM

MOPARXs solution is the trick, it allows each port's flange to conform more readily
to the head without being restrained by the other port flanges.

When you cut between the middle and end ports you'll see how the tubes then take a new
plane.

Try it, you'll like it....

Filing the welded bead headers with a large file works nice as well. Just ink them up and file lightly in multiple directions until the ink is gone. The wider the file the better.

remflex here as well

Re: Header gaskets - 08/19/20 01:11 PM

Remflex are THICK.... moved my headers enough to contact my steering. Nothing a little “ding” didn’t take care of, but something to think about.

I'm not a SBC guy but our endurance car is a GM product. When we were installing the headers I went to get the gaskets, my teammate (ran roundy roundy chevy's a long time) said what are you doing. He grabbed a tube of silicone and said this is all you need. And SOB we have 80+ hours of hard racing and NO leaks.

I stopped using header gaskets a long time ago....they always leak at the worst time.
Red Silicone for the win ! ! !

Re: Header gaskets - 08/20/20 02:34 PM

I only run the aluminum ones. https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/212555/10002/-1

The only time they blow is if the bolts shake loose. Usually need retightened a few times after install.

They are thick so may need slightly longer bolts.

I have re-used them up to a half dozen times.
