Will a 545 lift cam work in a stock 69 440 - 08/04/20 06:45 PM

Hi guys it’s been awhile since I last posted but I have a question
I have a bone stock 69 440 that I want to put a comp cam in
And I wanted to know if you think it will fit with out hitting valves to pistons
The cam is 545 lift with 285 297 duration
The pistons are .034 down in the hole.
And fel pro gaskets
I will be running stock Eddy rpm heads.

What do you think can I run this cam in a stock
440
Thanks in advance.

I am going to say no but the LSA could be wide enough at about 14.you can check easy by pushing on the valve and measure the stop distance.

Measure the lift on the cam thats in it .. that should tell you how much more lift you can go..
dont ever assume.. it will bite you

there should be enough retainer to seal clearance, but with bigger valves, tighter LSA, lot more lift than stock you could be in real trouble with the intake valve chasing the piston.

I think someone in past discussions said that between the bigger valves, thick margins and seat location that the valves are set closer to the deck surface in the Eddys verses factory original.

No piston valve reliefs? Interesting piston to deck distance for a stock 440.

could be. larger than stock valves should decrease piston to valve clearance a little. the eddy's i'm using have plenty of retainer to seal clearance. piston being .034" in the hole is a little odd.

the true rocker ratio will have a big effect on a hydraulic cam. rockers should be checked for ratio. shelf push rods wouldn't work with the edelbrock heads i'm using and this needs to be checked.

My feeling is that you’re not going to get the answer you want because you’re right in “maybe maybe not” territory.
If this was my motor and I haven’t ordered the cam yet, I’d be ordering the xe284 instead of the xe285hl just to make sure it clears.
The power difference is likely minimal.

I've thought the same thing about xe284 vs 285hl. I feel very confident that the OP will get into enough problems with the 284, especially with aftermarket rockers, than going for broke with the 285.

The rocker arms can make the differences in that cam working or not, I've seen after market race ductile iron rocker arms vary in the ratio from 1.42 to 1.53 on 1.5 ratio rockers rant
Stock Mopar ductile iron Hemi rocker vary a bunch more than the older ductile iron Max wedge rocker did shruggy
IHTHs up

Thanks guys for your advice and thoughts on this issue
I also have a new Mopar 509 cam here that I could go with
I’ll have to do some more homework
Thanks again 👍👍👍👍

Do you know what the compression ratio will be? Might not want that much cam unless its got a high stall or a 4spd

It’s a bone stock 69 440. It should be 10 to 1 but with the pistons down.034 in the hole
I don’t know.
And it will have a 3000 stall converter and 4.10 gears.
