Rod Bolt gall

Rod Bolt gall - 07/25/20 01:20 PM

Anyone ever see this happen. This is an ARP 2000 rod bolt. Had rod all cleaned and prepped. Was just checking bearing fit on bench and torqued to 60 ft lbs after hand screwing bolt most of the way in. Torqued fine. When I went to remove bolts, this one was stuck. Soaked in penetrant but required excess force removing. This looked like text book galling and material left in rod thread looked molten. I used a little oil for this check since I was not going to full torque value. Any idea on cause? Rods had been previously torqued for sizing big end, with no problems.

Obvious steel on steel. Looks like it picked up a burr or a particle of something going in. Lots of lube and cleaning always a good habit. If bolt going in finger tight meets any resistance back it out and clean and inspect. That's too bad probably ruined your rod also.

Yes verdict still out on the rod. I was able to remove the bolt threads from the rod threads with pick and small tip screw driver. Cleaned out with tap, but there is some gall damage to some threads. Lucky not totally destroyed. This is balanced stroked set that was ready for final assembly frown Obsolete rod too.

Which in hind site these new rods are great for clearance in stroked motors and such, but one mistake, or failure and the whole set becomes no good. Manufactures keep changing product design. Even the set of pistons I have use an out dated pin length and I got lucky in one manufacture still uses that length. Otherwise custom run of pins. Live and learn. But I still find it hard to believe that 60ft-lbs on a lubricated thread could have this happen. Wonder if the 2000 alloy more susceptible to this.

No way I'd use that rod. I know it's an odd ball and that's a problem. Find something else. Suck it up now before you have to sweep it up.

iagree shruggy
Some times things happen we don't like but we still have to deal with it, make the correct decision and get good results up
Make the wrong one and you will always regret it, especially on race motor parts work shruggy

Post up some pictures of the rod, weight, length, and maybe someone has a few spares from old builds laying on a shelf.

This is a street motor at 10 to 1 compression. The rod is 440 source I beam 686 at 790gms Stock hemi journal and pin size. I have an email into 440 source incase they had some single old stock on the shelf. But if some one had one that would be great.

Those rods were discontinued because they were CRAP. At least one of our members found out the hard way. I’ve gone 8.60’s@155mph with their H beem rods but I wouldn’t use one of the the old I beem rods in my lawn mower.

Had the same thing happen to a 440 source H beam rod about 10 years ago. Screwed the bolt in hand tight torqued fine with ARP lube. Couldn't get the bolt out, ended up breaking the bolt off in the rod trying to get it back apart.

Re: Rod Bolt gall - 07/27/20 04:32 PM

are those rods a through hole or a blind hole ?
i have found similar problems with blind holes when using too much lube. the lube puddles in the hole bottom, causing way too much stress on the threads, resulting in bolt breakage or damaged threads or both.

Hole is a thru hole. Both ARP and 440 say they have never seen it unless an air drive wrench used. Which certainly was not the case. Rod is obsolete so no joy with another from the source. This build is an old 66 hemi block that I salvaged and got in a lot. So not a lot invested. It is not going into the space shuttle or some NHRA record setting car, so even if a catastrophic failure occurs it will be along the lines of a 15 min trip at 40mph to the cruise in. Not 8 secs at 160mph down the track. Crank. rods and pistons I got for nothing, and the set up looks like it was never used. So while the quality maybe crap based on the rods, this build is probably less than what some of you guys spend on a weekend golf outing or your lawn mower laugh

So I am going to use the rod and see how it goes. It will be run and broken in on a test stand. The rod has more internal threads than the nascar rods used with a nut. So from a fastener perspective there is plenty of good threads to hold the torque.

I was just shocked that the bolt galled like that.
