Running/switching to E85

Running/switching to E85 - 07/20/20 11:45 PM

Well I just recently discovered that a co-op station about 5km from me has E85 so I would really like to run this fuel. I have two Quickfuel 1050 dominator blower carbs that were set for gas.

What is required to be able to run E85?

Thanks.

you need to talk to Mark Sullens. He does E-85 carbs. I run a Pro-Systems 1250 on a 540. Expect to buy an air fuel ratio gauge to start to get it dialed in. Once you you get all the minor things correct you should like it. Birdtracker

My current bracket car had been raced on methanol with a custom fuel system (7.5 gallon custom aluminum fuel cell) mounted up front for a blown B1 motor with a cam driven mechanical injection fuel pump.
I put a BG 400 pump between that tank and the motor to run E85 in my 800 HP bracket motor, I used a 100 micron fuel filter between the tank and the pump fed through a #10 AN PTFE Teflon lined stainless steel braided hose and added a 10 micron fuel filter fed through a #10 PTFE line between the pump and the 4 port Magnafuel regulator, I feed the Dominator carb. with # 6 AN PTFE line from the fuel regulator to the fuel bowls, I use .130 stainless steel Holley needles and seats to flow enough E85 into the motor with 5.5 lbs. pressure up

I was one of the first to switch to E85 back around 2006.

Buy a good E85 carb (it'll pay for itself in fuel over race gas in less than a season).

Set the fuel pressure a little lower than gas and go have fun.

Its that simple. I was fortunate enough to win quite a few big races on that stuff. I never drained anything ever. Ran a Mallory 110 with no regulator and eventually a 140 with regulator when the 110 died after many year s of service. On COLD mornings give a shot of gas (squirt bottle) to save your starter. Always stage at 160 or warmer. When done for the day let engine get to at least 200 before shutting down. Dewpoint imacts dial-in more than temp. Fine tune with air bleeds rather than jets. Rinse and repeat.

Dont overthink it.

I switched to Alky this year because everyone told me how much better it was. After spending thousands to upgrade I'm still waiting to see that payoff.

Not running the car yet. Hoping to get the rest of my engine parts this week including the heads, which I had to send back to FHO last year due to bad pitting on new castings. Why can't E85 run through a carb that has been set for gas?
I am not buying new carbs because between the Canadian peso, shipping and duties that would be another $3500+. I currently have Quickfuel 1050 dominators set up for a roots blower (14-71)

A gas carb will run way lean on corn.

I built about a dozen E85 carbs and there are alot of differences.

Boosters, Metering Blocks, Needle & Seats, Floats, Squirters, Air Bleeds, Etc...

By the time you convert you are almost ahead to buy new and sell the gas stuff.

E85 takes about 35% more volume and has a different weight than gas so its a totally different calibration.
