Cloyes multi keyways timing sets - 06/11/20 02:02 AM

down
I installed a Cloyes multi keyway timing set on a customers 350 Chevy motor today and degreed the cam, the timing marks on the crankshaft gear are marked backwards, just like the last 7 sets of new BB Mopar expensive timing sets I bought where whiney
Any one on here have a better company, product and brand to use from now on luck

I like my "gold series" Rollmaster. The degree marks were correct for straight up and advancing. I've heard ProGear are good too.

Try a Pro Gear set maybe?

I have not read anything negative about them yet (knock on wood).

I realize there is no excuse for the lower gear having the numbers stamped on it backwards.......but...... does it really matter?
Cab, I have to believe by now you know what notch on the gear equates to which position it is.

I assume you’re checking the installed position after you move the cam......so, what does it matter what the gear is stamped as long as the cam is installed correctly?

The first one of those 9 way sets I used had only a couple of dots stamped on the lower gear, designating the mid-point, or “0” position.
Then there was a slip of paper with a drawing of the lower gear depicting what the advance/retard values were for each of the other notches.

I just consider the dots to be markings that are there as a convenience to get you to a point that’s close enough to start degreeing the cam.

My thoughts that there are many guys believe what they see and don't verify where the cam is after using a set like those.
I've had several of the early BB true roller sets that had the cam gear dot between teeth instead of aligned with one, moving it one way was 12 degrees retarded and the other way was correct shock puke
My main message about this is to always verify any change you make to any motor up scope

is Cloyes a quality piece other than that issue? there's sure been a lot of complaints against em but not sure if it was the dot issue and or something else

A second for Pro Gear. I purchased a Pro Gear set for my last rebuild and the chain was a little loose due to line hone. I called the company and spoke with customer service about geatting a tighter chain and they sent out two chains to try at Zero cost. Great customer service for sure!

I guess I don't pay that close attention to it because anytime I want to change the cam timing I move it the way I feel it needs to go and then I always recheck it with the degree wheel to make sure I went the right way and did not make a mistake. I would never depend on the markings on them or should I say never trust them. I have moved to many that are never just the specs that they are marked. I see what Cab is saying but you have to check it anytime its changed to be sure its right. Ron
