Changing oil brand?

Changing oil brand? - 06/10/20 02:42 PM

I have always used Brad Penn oil in my 512 since it was built. The car hasn't been driven down the track for a few years but I always change the oil and filter every year as I like to fire it up once in a while. I even keep the belts up to date in the hope that the Dr.s will let me drive it some day. As you can imagine,an oil change is pretty expensive. I did buy some Rotella 15-40 that I could change it with. Should I change the oil or what...Thanks guys! Ted wave

The Brad Penn has been the best oil I have ever used, that being said, they have switched it to Penn Grade. I have only had one oil change with the new Penn Grade as I am still trying to use up all the BP first. I have not seen any ill effects, but then again, I do not have anywhere near a season on that brand, just one oil change.......Before that I was using VR1 which I believe is still around today, and would be my backup....The consensus around here lately is everyone is going to Driven....Haven't tried it. I am told they have both full and semi synthetic. Everyone I know is running the semi....with good results. Why the BP had to change is beyond me....My engines are so clean with that stuff its amazing.

Nothing has changed, Penn Grade is the same as Brad Penn, which was the same as the old Kendall. Same oil it has been for years, no reason to change just because the name is different.

AS per Ted's question. For what you are doing I don't think I would worry too much about what oil is in it, but not sure Id change it that often either

Some people I talked with have disagreed about the name changed and the oil stayed the same......... I am not saying either way, other than I have run a case of it with no issues, and it looked the same. Those folks switched to Driven. I have not tried that one or researched it. I looked at Amsoil & Redline, and I will stay with either BP or PG while I can get it.

My engine builder recommends this now

I have probably been through at least 10 of Penn Grade thus far. Not one single issue. Just had the pan off the Stratus and pulled a couple rod caps and they still look like day 1. FWIW we run Driven oils in the heads up car but we need a 0w5 and that narrows the options for sure.

Ted, sorry to hear that you can not drive this car.

Funny how a simple oil change question can get into a debate.... whistling wink

So reading the post, with just starting and running it till good and hot with ZERO miles driven, Rotella will be fine. I think even if you drove (snuck) it down the block and goosed it a few times that the Rotella is fine. Just get it up to operating temps a few times a year for a half hour and that Rotella should be good for two years.

"The results from all four tests prove the PennGrade 1 SAE 20W-50 High-Performance Oil is the same product today as the original Brad Penn product was more than 50 years ago — continuing to deliver the same proven performance customers have come to know and trust."

That statement really makes no sense. The API standards have changed many times over those 50 years. Today's oils bear little resemblance to oils from decades ago.

Why change it? Starting it every once in a while will not effectively harm anything. I know' I know. I have heard the noise but in the real world acid does not build up in a year from limited operation.

I have been running Brad Penn / Penn Grade for many years.
I am using it in my new engine in the Daytona too.
I run it in my street/strip 440 Cuda too, and I drive it less than 300 miles a year, changing the oil every year.
Not only am I happy with its quality, I can buy it from a local small supplier (by the case or two) at a good price.
With the sky high price of some designer oils, I think the semi-synthetic Penn Grade is affordable.

Driven Racing Oil Synthetic $12.99/qt
Driven Racing Oil Semi-Synthetic $9.99/qt
Valvoline VR-1 $7.99/qt
Penn Grade Semi-Synthetic $6.25/qt (when I bought it last fall) [$9 at Summit]
Shell Rotella 15W-40 Conventional $5.00/qt

But if you have to pay $9/qt and don't drive the car (just run the engine to circulate oil and get heat in it), the Rotella will be fine IMO.

We sent an oil sample out from the dragster after dyno sessions using the penn grade. The facility was shut down from Covid and is now reopen and way behind but should have the results here soon. Not expecting it to be any different than before but we will have a concrete answer.
