Torque converter repair sleeve? Anyone attempted?

My Turbo Action converter is wore where the front pump bushing rides. I've tried a couple of places locally to either get it welded and turned down or having the snout replaced.

Has anyone turned down the snout and installed a repair sleeve? I found them on O'Reilly's website in many different sizes. (I'd measure and determine what I needed).

Shipping this halfway across the country for TA to fix seems cost prohibitive and I have the combination working the way I want so I really don't want to purchase another one.

I would not trust a sleeve in that application. We've used sleeves to repair seal surfaces, but I've never used such a thing for a bearing/bushing surface, especially in a high RPM race type deal.

Any converter shop should be able to fix that without disturbing the setup of the converter. It would also be a good time to convert everything to the late style hub and pump, especially if this is a 904 application.

Trying to find someone fairly local to do exactly that without shipping halfway across the country to FL and having more in it than it's worth.

Depending on how bad it's worn, you can turn it down and use a Turbo 400 input bushing in the transmission to take up the loose space. The OD of the 400 bushing is the same as the 727, the ID is smaller. Select in New York did this for me on a 727 converter a few years back. I've had zero issues with it, and Ed told me he does this all the time on Torqueflites.

Call it up and see if T/A will send you a UPS label on their commercial account Or have me print one and paypal the cost over and I'll email you the label. It can't be *that* expensive to ship it there and back to have it checked out and repaired correctly.

The converter is in the shop at home and I'm at work. It is pretty minimal, though, just a few thou deep from the front bushing riding on the snout. Nothing excessive, just makes it leak past a little. I'm going to check with one more local place and then I planned on calling Turbo Action once I get the #'s off the converter.

how much clearance should be allowed between the bushing ID and the snout OD ? TIA !

The 400 bushing is 1.885" ID, while the 727 is 1.890" ID.

Going through the options this morning while I have some time. Called Turbo Action and they said $280.00 to replace the snout! This is before shipping! Jesus Jones...

Second call was to a local transmission shop. They can do it. For re-snouting it, centering it and cleaning it out, it's $220. I can live with that since it is just down the street and doesn't require $80 shipping.

If the wear groove is not too bad, simply order a couple different seals and measure, Most replacement seals put the lip in a slightly different spot. Just use the one that puts it in a different spot. I have taken off high mileage harmonic balancers, axle yokes, and converters that had several wear marks on them. Have used the stainless steel repair sleeves for balancers with good results, have never seen them for converters.

They are going to cut it apart and inspect it, too.

It really needs done as preventative maintenance. I put it through Hell and want to make sure it is up to the task when it goes back in.

I would expect it to need parts, every time I have sent a converter back to TA they recommend replacing parts after they look at it. Every time I have sent one back they have had lots of miles and passes on them as well so it makes sense, it just always cost more than I want lol.

Did you pump have a babbit (silver) or bronze pump bushing. The babbit is softer and easier on converter snouts as far as wear.
