Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet

Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/06/20 01:01 AM

Last fall, Jerico GTX (Jeff) and I made a bet. His Road Runner against my Hemicoupe. Quickest e.t. in 2020 wins dinner. Today, the future had been foretold by a world famous artist. This has Jeff's tail feathers (literally) ruffled a bit, but still, I'm not cutting him any slack on the 1320! While he's slacking off, polishing his pretty paint with his new California Duster, I'm going thru my motor and putting the coupe on a diet.

Just so you know what you have to currently surpass... but we all know Wile E Coyote NEVER caught the Road Runner.

Old Yeller, I sent you a friend request.

Joel, The only thing you'll be eating is crow, once again. You must have a really good recipe for it by now. We can always do another side bet? I'd wager another Dinner, that Becky will run in the 9's with the new chassis combo, before the Coop runs 9's.

I'm still moving forward. There is some stuff I was planning to do over the winter to lighten the car that can't be to accomplished with the motor in the chassis. Now that Drag Week is cancelled, does it make sense to put the motor back in for a couple weeks to win a bet, then tear it back out? Now that my valve springs finally showed up, I will get the Hemi screwed back together, and onto the dyno, then I'll see how much time remains before the expiration of the bet, to decide if I should temporarily put it together to trounce Jeff, or just buy him dinner... up

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/17/21 07:15 PM

Well the race is on! Joel has managed to keep himself from shiny objects lately, and focused on his HEMI Coupe. I finally got my short block back from the machinist, but waiting on my SR heads to be freshened up. They’ve had the wrong valve springs in them since who knows when... Hopefully they will be ready to go before this weekend. I’m hoping to make some test passes at Rockfalls on the 27th, then Joel and I will head to Norwalk for the Midwest Drags. Possibly going to 6 different tracks in one week.

I am really looking forward to that week.

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/17/21 07:59 PM

It's going to be close. I have the advantage of having all of my parts, Jeff is still waiting for his heads which is out of his control. Jeff has the advantage of his car already having run the number and being sorted out. I have the disadvantage of needing to test a new combination and being three or four tenths away from the target.

It could be anybody's race!

The Coupe doesn’t have suicide doors.

Secret weapon? I’m not scared. I’m hoping the new clutch program picks the car up at least a tenth.

At the very end of the night last night, I stepped on the clutch pedal, and the hydraulic throwout bearing popped open and fluid ran out the bellhousing. Not too hard to fix, but just more time. And I'm teetering on the precipice of not having enuff time to beat Jeff out of a dinner, and be ready for the Midwest Drags. I got out there early before work today and pulled the trans so assess the damage. One of the orings was torn and hanging out. Hopefully a new O-ring and reassembly will cure it. I also need to figure out how to keep it from happening again.

As we have discussed, as time goes on, we'll have many dinners together. It's just a matter of who will have to pay the tab. I'm at a stand still. You have time, and don't worry about it.

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/18/21 07:27 PM

I really detest aftermarket t/out bearings. Have yet to see one that did not have some strange issue eventually.

What bellhousing is in that thing Joel? Hopefully it will be a quick r&r for you. I'd grab a couple of spare o-rings for the tool box too.

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/18/21 07:30 PM

Jerimiah, its a QUicktime bell. The TO bearing worked fine with the long style Mcleod Soft Lok. But now I put in a diaphram style Mclead RTX. I went thru the measure/calculate thing to determine the # of rings behind it. I'll have to double check that. Or could the diaphragm be too soft or have more travel of the fingers?
Posted By: Jeremiah

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/18/21 09:33 PM

In my experience the finger height on the long style plate is way taller than a diaphragm style. How much difference was it between the two?
Posted By: Hemi_Joel

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/18/21 10:19 PM

Jeremiah they were about the same height, but the long clutch was a single desk, the diaphragm is a dual disk. When I get home from work I'm going to double check the measurements.

I've left two messages for American powertrain, that's who made the throw out bearing. They haven't called me back yet. I had so much trouble with them when I originally bought the stuff, I would never buy anything from them again.

Jeff is getting nervous that he might have to skip a house payment after I order shrimp and lobster, with a filet mignon on the side. Finally got the Hemi Coupe mostly back together, Sunday I fire it up. My shop looks like a tornado went thru...

After all of that no verdict on the technical stuff? : D

Glad you have it back together and ready to run. I'd imagine that thing is pretty tight to work on with the monster tko?

While Joel still has the dreaded 5% left to finish his Coupe, the Road Runner is ready to go.

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/24/21 07:51 PM

Yes, the dreaded 5% has reared its ugly head. whiney

I made up just the right length spacer to go between the TO bearing and the Transmission, put it together, got it running. But the clutch won't disengage cleanly enuff to put it in gear. So the trans needs to come back out and get that figured out. Also I messes up the threads for the fuel inlet in one of the carbs, it leaks a little so I need to fix that. But the motor seams to have no issues.

Joel and I had a discussion on the phone today, and we might have a solution to the clutch issue. If it works, we will fill everyone in on the fix. It could very well cost me a dinner, but at the end of the day, Joel is a good friend, and I want to see his car succeed.

Thanks for the idea, Jeff. That is a true friend to help me out when a dinner is potentially at steak. (pun intended) Trans comes out tonight for another go at it!

In 2015, after our first Drag Week together, I told Joel as long as he would have me as his Trunk Monkey, count me in. If we make it to Midwest Drags, I’ll actually be passing up the opportunity to run my own car. Joel and I travel well together, and we’ve been on many trips.

Bert and Ernie come to mind. LOL Good luck at Midwest Drags. I may have to have a sick day and make the drive.

Jeff I know you always joke about how cheap Joel is but here's a deal that would make him happy to buy dinner. Yep $5.99 Porterhouse's. Going on the grill soon. If Dragweek was coming though here I'd feed you both just for the entertainment. Lol

Just to show that I'm not really that cheap: If I came to your place for a free porterhouse steak dinner, I would waive half of my appearance fee. smile

Joel I know you like seeing odd things so would taking you to Camp Lincoln military museum to see General Santa Anna's wooden leg that the Illinois Calvary took from him when they captured him at the Battle of San Jacinto which gave Texas it's independence from Mexico cover your fee?

Texas hates that Illinois has this spoil of war they captured.

That is right up Joel's alley! DEAL! I mean, who would pass up that kind of opportunity?

Now you're talking my language! I might have to sabotage the race effort just so we can finish early and go see that wooden leg!

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 05/26/21 07:17 PM

Just an update they got the leg from him in 1847. He had not lost his leg yet in 1846 and had both legs still at the battle of San Jacinto. Heck I know you missed it last time so I'll even take you up in the Arch in St. Louis.

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 04/20/23 06:45 PM

Time to bring this post back up to date for everyone. Not long after the last post in this thread, I broke the 499 in my Road Runner. Only thing I could salvage were the heads, and intake...

Fast forward to this year, Joel and I have made another dinner bet. If I run an 8.999 or faster, Joel has to buy me dinner. If Joel runs 9.999 or faster, I have to buy him dinner. The time frame was to be done by July 15th. Either way we could end up buying each other dinner. We unfortunately have one major setback... Joel has his HEMI apart, and the heads sent out to the guy that first set them up, as the valves are bent, and one of the seats has an issue. The biggest setback, is, there are no titanium valves available for his setup at this time, with no time frame given as to when they will be available. So if Joel can't get the HEMI back together, I'm not going to make him buy me dinner IF I can run an 8 second pass. As much as I like watching Joel open his wallet, it's not a fair bet.

I hope Joel gets the HEMI together. I'm getting hungry...

What is Joel planning on taking to Hot Rod's Drag Week?

With the indefinite wait on my heads, I'm not making any drag week, or even drag racing plans this year. If the heads get done and show up in time for me to put the car together and make drag weak, that will be great but I didn't register, so I'll just have to show up if the car is ready.

I have so many other projects that have got shoved to the back burner for way too long, I'm going to focus on trying to get some of them done this year.

I am feeling so tempted to put a gen 2 Hemi in my coupe. But I would need to remodel the whole steering system because the oil pump hits the steering box. And I would lose my beloved eight carb setup. And with the opportunity to focus on completion of a bunch of other half done stuff, I don't think I'll go down that path. Even though it's hard for me to contemplate.

I have a pretty good stash of new Ti valves. What are the specs? I want to see the 9.xxx pass!

Jeremiah, I need 8 Ferria S0201264 titanium intake valves
Posted By: Jeremiah

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 04/23/23 01:51 PM

That p/n does not come back on Ferrea's website. What size/OAL/stem diameter are we seeking?
Posted By: Hemi_Joel

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 04/24/23 12:31 AM

Jeremiah, they are custom titanium valves. 5.300 - 5.350 long, 2.2 diameter, 0.290 tip, V-Groove, 5/16 in stem, 23 to 24° tulip. If I could find something close enough to modify, that might be good enough. Thanks, Joel
Posted By: Hemi_Joel

Re: Jerico GTX VS Hemi Joel dragstrip dinner bet - 04/25/23 04:07 AM

We found some stainless blanks, availability in 3 to 4 weeks. So I'm going to switch over to them because it seems the wait for titanium valves is indefinite. They will be more of a nail head than a tulip head so I'll give up a little bit of flow, but that will save some weight on the valve to help make up for the heavier material. Hopefully I'll have the car on the track this year.

So the big question mark now is, will Jeff run his 8.90s off the trailer? Or will it be a time consuming process where I will have a chance to get things together and win the bet?

Of course I want the free dinner from Jeff, nothing better than that in my book. Except seeing Jeff's car work flawlessly on the first outing. In that case all happily buy us both dinner.
