transmission coolers with fan ??? - 02/23/20 03:27 PM

anyone use those transmission coolers with the fans mounted to them ?
if so, where did you mount it ?
how big of a one did you use ?
how did you control the on/off temperature ?
how far away from the exhaust does it need to be ?

as always the case, i thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts and advice ! up bow boogie

I put one on my hot rod.. it worked but I pulled it off.. it didnt do what I wanted.. mine was mounted
under the car near the rear of the car.. you can increase the length of the trans line to help cool

Earliest use I am aware was back in the early 90’s on Dodge Diesel, before we went to lockup. Was a dealer service bulletin add on for those that towed. Cooler/Fan module went under the driver side box behind the cab. Had a shield to protect against stones and debris.

It effectively prolonged trans life. I don’t recal the on/off set points, but back in the day we used to turn on lockup at 265 on converter out temp on so equipped vehicles. This fan was probably close for “on” temp.

Sump temp is a better place for the sensor because that’s what the transmission internals see for temp.
Keep it around 160-180 for economy and durability.

Keep the cooler lines as short as possible. With the fan you don’t have to worry about where to place it except keep it out of the way of stones and mud to protect the fins.

I know of some racers that run the B&M cooler with fan. They are the more expensive one's that have the 175 degree thermostat so they turn on and off by themselves. Some guys mount them by the radiator up front if there is room, others mount them under the floor pan if they have enough clearance depending on how their headers/exhaust are ran. I personally just use a plate style in front of my radiator and my trans hardly ever sees about 200 degrees (Probe is in pan)

I dont recall the on/off temps but I also put a on override switch on it.. was a B&M cooler
about 10" by 10"... most of the time the over ride switch was off

I have one mounted under the trunk floor in my Duster.

I had one and tried it different places under the car and it didn’t do what I needed it to do. Powerglides on the transbrake with 6000 stall converters build lots of heat. It was just another power drawl doing nothing so I moved it up front. I mounted it on my radiator with 1/2 inch gap. I have a twin sealed fan unit mounted on the inside of my radiator and it drawls plenty of air to cool both. Mine is drag only so I’m not fighting traffic.

I never used one with a fan.The stacker style with a fan was supposed be the chit. I always used a large cooler out front in direct air. up

Rubber line and screw clamps. Doggone track oilers.

I run one under my trunk floor at an angle to catch air as much as possible. I also used braided stainless line to the unit for safety reasons. Years ago I had a trans line come loose and almost hit the wall head on from then on braided all the way. Very satisfied with current installation after trying several other.

The fans don't last long.
At least one side of the core must be shrouded, or the hot air will just recycle.

Fact. And they use gas line 'cause "it never was a problem before" and the real hydraulic stuff is 'spensive. Hose turns to mush.

I like the cooler under the car. Hoses can be kept short and reduces the clutter at the front of the car. The heat sink style has worked well for me and we've also used the Earls unit with the fan for the more demanding deals.

-6 AN fittings with Teflon hose and PTFE style fittings..

We had a Mopar Racer at Keystone not only get the whole track but the pit road too last year. We ate dust all day in the pits. The don’t call the Mopar race the “oil down nationals” for nothing. We do have our share of hard headed racers.

I told Elmer at Hagerstown once - his Mopar meet is the annual rustproofing for the race track. He laughed.
