Who lives near Cecil County or MIR Dragway - 02/16/20 12:27 AM

Was wondering who lives close to these tracks?
How long does it take you to get there?

They are almost at opposite ends of the state, so I don't understand your point of reference.

Any place about 45 minutes to the ocean as well.
Trying to get a feel for the area.

You better be careful going to one of those tracks. Your going to get spoiled and never go to a slow track again. Lol 😂

Be carful both areas are relatively close to the bay. You just may give up racing and get a boat. The Chesapeake is just to great not to get out on in the summer!

Pick me a town where I can have both worlds and be pretty close to both.
Taxes are relatively cheap there compared to Pa. And the roads really stink here.

Southern Anne Arundel county "Davidsonville/ Annapolis area" A bit pricey but nice. This would be closer to MIR, hour or less tops and 1.5 to Cecil. Unfortunately Baltimore is kind of in the middle of the two and considering the congestion/city etc. I would not recommend it. Sadly Capitol Raceway is a great track too right in AA CO. 20 minutes from me but they are saying it might not re-open in 2020. That's a whole different story. Harford and Cecil county up north are nice Cecil is very rural and more affordable if that's what you like. As I have gotten older I have found I just can't stay off that water in the summer, its a whole different world but I still have cars : ) and love both tracks.

If you want the ocean and drag strip close by you could look at the DE beach towns like Bethany or Rehoboth. US13 drag strip is close by.
Most people I know want to leave MD not move here.

Why do they want to leave?
I was actively looking at Rehoboth.
My buddy lives there but I need to build a big poll barn. This is not an option.
I need to duplicate my poll barn.

It would be interesting to hear 440Jim's input on this. He used to live in SoMd about a 45 minute drive from MIR, but relocated to NC when he took early retirement a few years ago.

It would also be interesting to find a location in eastern Md roughly equidistant between Cecil County, US 13, and MIR, then start checking housing & property values.

High taxes, cost of living, congestion and anti 2A. Everyone I know here has an exit plan once they stop working. Baltimore city, PG and Montgomery counties pretty much run the state.
I am not a water person but getting to the ocean is a bit a challenge during the summer unless you are on the eastern shore. Bay Bridge is a nightmare.

This right here. Been here all my life, except in Charlotte NC for 13 years, cant wait to go back south. Stay out of MD if you can think for yourself. Most of the people here are idiots and believe all the crap those morons in Annapolis preach.

Is Delaware any better?
Or uh s it pretty much the same.
Found a few houses and taxes are only $1200 to $1500.00 a year. Are there more hidden fees I'm missing?

I am in Middletown DE. I lived in Milton, DE for 20+ years moved north 6 years ago. If you have a good retirement program and don't need to make any money lower DE is great. Taxes are lower property is not too out of control yet. If you need to work and make more then $15 an hour don't go any further south then Smyrna. The biggest problem living in lower DE is your an hour and a half to anywhere really. I like the Middletown/Smyrna area. You can commute to Philly or Baltimore in an hour and taxes are still reasonable property is getting high but still doable.

And yes STAY OUT OF MD!!!!!! I lived in MD until I was old enough to get out. My sister and mother both still live in MD. Taxes are ridiculous both income and property.

Maryland property tax depends a lot on where you live. I am on the shore and i am about 30 minutes to the bay, 30 minutes to the beach and about 40 minutes to US13 in delmar. It's roughly 3 hours to Cecil and 3.5 to MIR from here.

How is US31?
Is it a good track?
Trying to locate where I can get some decent property and pay under $1700.00 a year in taxes.

I don't hear that very often about the state of Maryland!
State income tax, plus county income tax; total approximately 7.5%
Sales tax 6.0% with 9.0% on beer, wine, alcohol.
Property taxes just depend on where you compare it to.

I lived in Annapolis, MD from 1983 to 1997. Nice place. Traffic going east on the summer weekends toward the beaches is bad at the Chesapeake Bay bridge.
And property values (cost) and taxes anywhere near Annapolis are going to be high. For example, current price of the house I lived in 1995 is $470,000 on 0.4 acres, and property tax $4,500/year. 567 Woodberry

That house is extremely expensive for the size of that house.
Unless it has huge acreage.
I was looking at homes in New Castle and Elkton.
Nice 3500 sq. Foot house is $309,000 on 1.4 acres.
Just trying to get in the middle of MIR and Cecil County, leaning towards Cecil more.
And not be too far from the beach if possible.

I'm in Baltimore. 1 hr to Cecil, 1 1/2 hr to MIR and used to be 35 min to Capitol. I'll be spending most of my year at Cecil to run the UNSS class.

Not a bad track. 1/4 mile track but they mostly do 1/8 mile currently. They also have a dirt track and go kart track also. Usually race on Sundays in the spring and fall and Friday nights in the summer. This year they have several Friday, Saturday and Sunday races. I don't have a large house, i have a decent 30x32 garage and 1.5 acres and our property taxes are less than $550 a year.

Its all a matter of perspective. Funny to hear people say taxes are high in MD or DE. I live in New York, i pay 13,000 in property taxes on a small 150 x 50 lot with a 1200sq foot house. ….However I tow 192 miles each way to Cecil county since it has such a great monthly program.

Right?! I thought $4500 for a $498,000 house was a typo, lol. We're paying over $12,000 for the same house in North Jersey! There's a mass exodus from here too.

Have you looked through this to see what counties have the highest average house prices and tax rates? https://smartasset.com/taxes/maryland-property-tax-calculator ==> "Welcome to Maryland!"

Oh, wait, I don't live there any longer. tonguue

That's 33% cheaper than Illinois.

Re: Who lives near Cecil County or MIR Dragway - 02/19/20 04:38 PM

Tax rate is lower but I would think property values are much higher so it is still a lot of $$$$.
Not a lot of nice places with a tax bill under $4k, add on state and local income taxes and it gets stupid.
Then the anti 2A crap is the cherry on top.

Re: Who lives near Cecil County or MIR Dragway - 02/19/20 06:16 PM

One thought. When I lived in southern Maryland, 40 minutes from MIR, some regular racers lived in VA just over the border on US301.
King George VA, Dahlgren VA, etc. One guy was no farther from MIR then I was. But I lived in Lexington Park MD, which is out on the peninsula (Chesapeake Bay). Since there is no where to cross the Bay from there, everything is far away. You need to drive almost an hour to start a trip to Cecil, etc.
Should be much less expensive land in King George county VA. Do you need a job, retired, etc.?

There is a small 1/8 mile track in Colonial Beach, VA too. (see map)
And Virginia Motorsports Park (Dinwiddie, VA) is only about 2 hrs from Dahlgren.
Richmond dragway about the same. Summer Duck track etc.

Yes, I do live in Virginia. wave

Anybody remember that -- or even raced at it when -- Colonial Beach was once a 1/4-mile track? grin (See pic of my old '69 Super Bee below, circa 1980)

I think they got the hint that maybe they weren't really safe at a full 1320 when John Paris (whose house & shop & I used to rent about 25 years ago) ran his Alcohol Funny Car right off the end of the shutdown area when his chutes didn't deploy. eek

Sorry for hijacking the thread... just an interesting little tangent after the Colonial Beach reference. whistling

How is Georgetown, Delaware?
Its 1.45 hours to Cecil County.
Taxes are $1100.00 state tax I presume it means and School tax is $1000.00
County tax is $100.00
Alot of average that I want.

I live near the northern part of the eastern shore of md. About 1 hour from Cecil County dragway. Taxes here are about $2200 a year IIRC. Some areas are even cheaper in taxes. Parts of delaware are just as close with even cheaper taxes

Ultimately, I really want to be about 15 minutes to the beach.
What town is a little more east than Georgetown?
I really would like to be centered about an hour to Cecil County max.

Unfortunately the closer you go to Cecil County dragway the farther you get from the ocean. I don`t know if you spoke of US13 dragway. It is about 30- 35 minutes to Georgetown De. We stop at that track when we go to Ocean City MD.

That will work for me.
Just put in a bid to see if they are negotiable.
If so.
I'll be going down to see the area.
My friend said Georgetown is a great town.

Re: Who lives near Cecil County or MIR Dragway - 02/22/20 01:22 AM

The area around Milton is nice and between Milton and Georgetown is not bad. West of Georgetown is going to put you 30-40 minutes from the beach in the summer. In my opinion living near the beach is really overrated. I lived 15 minutes from the beach and the DAILY traffic gridlock in the summer heck really year round now gets old quick. My best suggestion would be to rent a place for a few weeks in the summer if you can swing it and check out the area really well. Make sure the property you look at is high and doesn't have water issues. If it has a mound system stay as far away as possible.
